Todd Bowles ripped into the Jets after the team lost to Houston at NRG Stadium.
That is fine. They deserved it.
But as much as you can blame the team, but perhaps Bowles and Mike Maccagnan need to be just as critical of themselves.
There are many in the media hesitant to say this because they are close with the agents, but giving Darrelle Revis $39 million guarantee was a major blunder.
Another major blunder was teaming him with a cornerback even older than him.
I’m sorry folks, I hate to be this negative on the eve of a holiday, but this was really bad business, and it’s contributed to them losing games.
Rex Ryan had a saying that makes a lot of sense (I don’t disagree with everything he says – LOL), “The two positions that will cost you a game the quickest are quarterback and cornerback.”
And that was on full display in Houston.
I like Ryan Fitzpatrick more than most. He has a lot of moxy and is a good fit for Chan’s offense, but his two picks at the end of the Houston game were inexcusable.
But I’m not sure if people realize how poorly Revis truly played in Houston.
Let me give you a rundown from my film study. I spend five-six hours going over each game. I’m not looking for plaudits, I’m just trying to point out that the following is after going over the game with a fine tooth comb. Here goes. This might be painful for some.
*On the Texans’ first possession, DeAndre Hopkins beat Darrelle Revis down the right sideline, with a double-move, and was wide open, but T.J. Yates overthrew him.
“DeAndre Hopkins has him by five yards,” said Rich Gannon.
*On the Texans’ first drive, Cecil Shorts cut away from Revis over short middle, but dropped the pass.
*On the Texans’ second drive, Hopkins caught a 13-yard pass on the left side on a back shoulder threw with Revis in coverage.
*In the second quarter, Hopkins caught an 18-yard out on the deep right side on Revis
*Late in the second quarter, Hopkins beat Revis for a 61-yard touchdown.
“An emerging young star beats an aging star in Revis,” Kevin Harlan said.
*In the third quarter, Shorts beat Revis on a deep out on the right side for a gain of 16.
Shortly after the Shorts’ catch, Revis had to leave the game with a concussion after tackling running back Akeem Hunt.
And I’m not even going to get into Antonio Cromartie here. I’ve been over that enough. You all know that he gave up that 35-yard route to Shorts in the third quarter when he attempted to jump a short out, when he doesn’t have the burst to do this anymore. This drive ended in a touchdown. If he just allowed the catch and tackled him for a short gain, who knows?
And Bowles continues to stick with Cromartie, and I’m the bad guy for continuing to ask why.
If you want to look around for blame, of course the quarterback is always a dart board, but in my opinion, the corners are #1 on the blame list.
This was a really bad plan.
Really bad.
And it’s not like they don’t have cornerback depth, they do, but ego and money are preventing them from doing anything.
How precarious is the situation with Revis?
He’s iffy for this week’s game, and honestly it’s not a big deal. The Nick Mangold hand injury is a much bigger concern.
So Todd can yell at the team all he wants.
But Mike and Todd need to look in the mirror.
Perhaps you can throw in Woody if he pushed the Revis signing for PR reasons.
