New Jersey – A number of things to get into today in our recap of the Jets’ win over the Titans.
You want to hear something pretty absurd.
One of the big reasons former Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt was fired early this season, was the owner, and some others, didn’t think that his scheme protected Marcus Mariota well enough. They felt he was taking too many hits.
How’d that change work out for Mariota?
Mariota was sacked five times and hit on seven other occasions today.
When they drafted Marcus Mariota out of Oregon (not a pro-style offense), and started him as a rookie, did they think they were going to win?
To fire Whisenhunt was laughable and bush league.
The Titans are a very poorly run organization, there is no way around it.
Amy Adams is now the owner, and she’s never around. She lives in Texas. She inherited the team from her father.
It’s probably a good time to sell.
Here is a name to keep in mind – Peyton Manning.
Clearly this is his last year as a player, and he’s an icon in Tennessee, and lives there in the off-season.
Two possibilities here. He puts a group together to buy the team, or he takes the role John Elway has in Denver, running the football operation . . .
Whenever you see Mike Maccagnan at the stadium, he always has the same guy at his side. It’s Brian Heimerdinger. It’s like Batman and Robin.
Heimerdinger is the Jets director of player personnel.
If the name sound familiar, it should – he is the son of the late Mike Heimerdinger, the Jets offensive coordinator in 2005. Mike Heimerdinger also a long-time offensive coordinator with the Titans.
Brian Heimerdinger is 29
He was a scouting intern for Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan when he worked for the Houston Texans.
Brian Heimerdinger spent the past three seasons with the St. Louis Rams evaluating pro and college players. He was the Rams’ college scout for the Southwest.
Brian played wide receiver at Northern Colorado . . .
Now that the Cowboys are out of it, you have to wonder if they will take a look at backup quarterback Kellen Moore.
They are having a really hard time moving the ball with Matt Cassel.
I wouldn’t be shocked if a change happens this week . . .
As you know by now Devin Smith hurt his knee today covering a punt.
The Jets claim they have to see the results of an MRI tomorrow before knowing the severity of the injury.
Teams always says that, but they usually know before that. So it should leak out before the MRI result.
On a human level, I hope it’s not as serious as it looked when he was carted off.
Remember, Rob Gronkowski was carted off a couple of weeks ago, and he’s playing tonight. So being carted off doesn’t always mean it’s a season-ender.
But this injury really isn’t going to hurt the Jets very much, if at all.
Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three pass to Smith in the first half, and on all three, the two weren’t on the same page.
The player behind Smith is actually better than him now, and that is Kenbrell Thompkins.
I’m not making light of a serious situation in terms of Smith’s injury, but from a football standpoint, Thompkins is an upgrade. He’s much higher on the growth curve as a receiver. When you play receiver for the Patriots for three years, you know how to run crisp routes. Thompkins is the consummate profession. Ryan Fitzpatrick loves him.
