Interesting comments from a prominent sports media figure about the Jets and Kirk Cousins.
I’m talking about Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd.
“If I were Kirk Cousins, I would not go to the New York Jets,” Cowherd said on February 20. “The New York Jets have not been a stable franchise, and one of the things Kirk Cousins is as a human being is a very stable human being.”
Where do a start on this one?
Well I guess you can make an argument they have been a little unstable from the standpoint of constant change in leadership, at GM from Terry Bradway to Mike Tannenbaum to John Idzik to Mike Maccagnan. At HC, from Herman Edwards to Eric Mangini to Rex Ryan to Todd Bowles. Man has there been a lot of change in these two key spots.
And how about offensive coordinators. Bilal Powell has worked under Brian Schottenheimer, Tony Sparano, Marty Mornhinweg, John Morton and now Jeremy Bates. That is five different coordinators, five new playbooks, in eight years. That isn’t good for players to change systems that often.
So when you look at all the turnover at GM, head coach and offensive coordinator, it’s hard to argue with Cowherd’s argument that the Jets haven’t been stable. at least from that standpoint.
“Sometimes you need to match your personality with a company, or it gets very frustrating,” Cowherd said. “If you are a risk-taker, go to a company that takes risks. If you are a very stable, coachable guy, and that is what Kirk Cousins is, that is his personality, don’t go to the Jets.”
I think another reason you could argue the Jets aren’t the most stabile place is the insane media scene around here, and the fact they don’t do enough to combat it.
Look, I’m no here to defend Mo Wilkerson’s lateness; it’s unacceptable. But it’s also unacceptable how the Daily News has treated him, like comparing him to the “Goodyear Blimp.” Where is the pushback from the organization, somebody saying, “You aren’t doing to treat our players that way. That is uncalled for.”
A friend of mine talked to Ryan Fitzpatrick in Tampa Bay, and said he wasn’t thrilled with the chaotic scene.
I’m telling you, the media scenes in other places around the league are far less chaotic, a lot more stable, than this one.
The media scene around here impacts the quality of workplace for players. There is no doubt about it.
When the Star-Ledger took that cheap shot at Christian Hackenberg, claiming that two of his passes hit reporters in 2017 off-season practices, which was an embellishment, where was the organization to defend him?
One of the problems is Todd Bowles seems to believe that these media battles aren’t his battles, and he need to focus on football.
Of course, his main focus should be football, but when the honor of your players is attacked, you need to have their back, you can’t just ignore it.
So to me, some of the media people around here have actually impacted the stability of the organization.
And the organization needs to have a better plan to combat it. And I have pointed out on many occasions.
So Cowherd might be on to something.
Cousins will have to consider this.
There is no doubt the Jets need to improve in the stability department.
Maybe this will improve in the coming years.
