East Rutherford, NJ – Here are some notes and observations from the Jets’ scrimmage Saturday night at MetLife Stadium . . .
Marcus Maye really came on this week in camp, and punctuated a strong week with a “Pick Six” against Josh McCown.
It’s hard to know if it would have been a pick and TD since there is no tackling, but it was a terrific interception, that is for sure.
But there is also a negative for the Jets on this place.
It was a bad play by McCown.
When you throw a pass that a rookie safety, albeit a good one, but a rookie, jumps it, that isn’t ideal. It means it was pretty badly telegraphed . . .
Quincy Enunwa left the Jets scrimmage with a neck injury. He clearly has stinger issues. It’s unclear how long he will be out, but you don’t want to mess with a neck, and this his second issue in a few months . . .
Late in the scrimmage, Christian Hackenberg might have had his best play as a Jet – practice, preseason game and so forth.
Under pressure, he stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush, and fired a rocket to TE Jordan Leggett for a 25-yard TD.
He showed good pocket awareness to avoid the rush, and then he showed his rare arm talent with a perfect throw into the middle of the end zone.
Don’t him in Canton just yet. He still needs some work on his accuracy, which was we saw on other plays, like when he missed a wide-open Austin Seferian-Jenkins on a crossing route.
But this TD pass to Leggett shows you Hackenberg’s enormous potential . . .
The knee injury to rookie cornerback Xavier Coleman is unfortunate for the kid, who has overcome so much in his life, including open heart surgery, and he was having a very good camp. He has very good instincts, and on the play he got hurt, he had perfect position on an incompletion in the corner of the end zone . . .
Inside linebacker Julian Stanford was very active during the scrimmage, showing great range, and making a number of plays on the ball. So far in camp he’s made more plays than Darron Lee. If it was up to me, I could allow these two to have an open competition, but I doubt that will happen. You know how political these things are . . .
McCown threw a five-yard TD pass to tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins on linebacker Spencer Paysinger.
Two touchdowns pass to tight ends in this scrimmage. You can see how much more involved the tight ends are in the Jets’ offense this year.
Leggett looks like a bonafide steal. Like I mentioned the other day, he’s really getting after it as a blocker, and that was the question about him coming out of Clemson. His receiving skills are terrific. If he continues to show he can be a complete tight end, this guy is clearly better than a fifth-round talent.
