New Jersey – It’s time for another dose of “News to Me” with a few items today off the beaten path. Let’s get into it . . .
I talked to Erin Henderson today, and he said he’s “out to show the organization made a wise decision.”
Remember, he was out of football last year dealing with an alcohol problem that got him tossed out of Minnesota, where he was a player on the rise with the Vikings.
This guy is a really good football player. He was lighting it up in the Detroit preseason game before being knocked out with two injures – a hyperextended elbow and MCL knee sprain.
He’ll play on special teams for the first time since 2011 . . .
Brandon Marshall spoke today for the first time since he said on Showtime, “”There are a lot of players out there that believe that white players — specifically, at the quarterback position — are treated differently,”
This was after the Tom Brady suspension reversal.
The quote made little sense.
How is the NFL somehow operating under a racial double-standard based on the Brady case?
They suspended him for four games. It was a circuit judge who reversed it. How is that on the NFL?
Marshall says he stands by his comments, but claims he’s not calling the judge a racist.
So since he’s not calling the judge a racist, and the NFL threw the book at Brady, not exactly sure what he’s talking about . . .
Seeing Sheldon Richardson in the locker room today was kind of sad, and he looked sad. He loves football and he will miss the first four games due to a suspension.
This has to be so hard on him, even though he brought it on himself.
Somebody asked him how he was doing, and he responded, “As good as can be expected.” . . .
Devin Smith was returning kicks today. While he’s not going to play this week, it will be interesting to see what he can do when he returns kicks for the Jets. It will likely be Smith and Chris Owuso, once Smith his healthy. While Smith has world class speed, he wasn’t considered a particular good kick returner at Ohio State. Very good receiver, pedestrian kick returner in Columbus.
Maybe Bobby April can tweak some things that can take his kick returning skills to another level . . .
This Jace Amaro H-Back thing was a media creation.
The tight end is now on IR, but the reason I bring this up, is because Chan Gailey was asked about Amaro today, vis-à-vis, H-Back, and what he said sums it up best.
“I don’t know if we know what’s gone,” Gailey said about Amaro.
Basically, it’s hard to make a big deal about an injury, when the player hasn’t truly established himself yet.
Gailey said he didn’t know what Amaro’s role was going to be because he got hurt so early in camp.
I’ve said this before, and I will say it again, Amaro isn’t a H-Back. Charles Clay in Buffalo is an H-Back. Niles Paul in Washington is an H-Back. These are smaller, quicker hybrid players, almost a combo of TE/FB/WR into one. This isn’t Amaro, who is a 6-5, 260 pound conventional tight end, regardless of what they did at Texas Tech that one year.
This H-Back thing took on a life of his own. It wasn’t really steeped in reality . . .
