Two of the players the Jets released on the cuts to 53 are guys out with concussions. They look like they can play in the league, but are still aren’t over their head injuries. Dan takes a look at what is going on with these two guys . . .
The Josh Mauga release is sad.
He was having a tremendous camp before it ended prematurely (before one game) with a blast to the side of the head from “The Terminator.”
I thought Rex was a little out of line on Thursday, implying the linebacker was injury prone.
True Mauga had a back injury last year, but this wasn’t on the Jets watch. He suffered that at Nevada-Reno and rehabbed that on his own, and it’s fine now.
And then this summer, Connor concussed him, what do you want from Josh?
Maybe if Rex wasn’t hyping John Connor’s hitting so much, the kid might have curtailed his approach with his teammates.
What was really accomplished by Rex essentially ending Mauga’s chances of making the team?
Ryan admitted on Thursday night that Mauga was doing so well in camp, he had emerged as the team’s third inside linebacker, ahead of Lance Laury and Kenwin Cummings.
Mauga is clearly a player. His instincts are outstanding. Every time you turned around, he was making a play in Cortland. He has a feel for the game you can’t teach.
I’d be shocked it he’s not on the practice squad, unless he’s claimed.
But one factor that might help the Jets get him to the practice squad is that there is no preseason film on him. So unless another team had a spy in Cortland, they might not know how well he was doing up there.
Also, he’s still suffering some lingering effects on the concussion, so another team might be wary of claiming him.
Another player whose concussion could help him make it to the practice squad is Donovan Warren.
Rex was very hard on him early in camp about his play, but remember, safety is a new position for him, so his inconsistency is understandable.
He’s also very young, coming out of school after his junior year.
He has the potential to be a very good safety, but it will take time. It will also take time to heal from the concussion.
But if the Jets give up on him, they are probably making a mistake.
I don’t think they will give up on him.
Remember, his Godfather is Jets defensive line coach Mark Carrier.
So he’s like family. That’s in his favor.
The thing that was very impressive about him during camp, before the injury, was how hard he was hitting people, as an undersized safety.
Perhaps that is why he got concussed.
