Woody might be overrating his quarterback Dan Leberfeld
Jets owner Woody Johnson had this to say about Mark Sanchez – “With Mark, you have a 25 year old quarterback that you can develop. You can have a quarterback for 10 years with a guy like this. These guys aren’t available every day. We have a lot of confidence in Mark and we think that he is our guy. I think we are blessed that we have a guy that can climb the ladder and can get a lot better. He can do everything. He has the work ethic. He has all the ingredients in place to be a great quarterback.”
This quote is rife with hyperbole.
“You can have a quarterback for 10 years with a guy like this.”
If he doesn’t improve from the last year, he shouldn’t be a 10-year quarterback, but less than a four-year quarterback.
“These guys aren’t available every day.”
There are plenty quarterbacks available. who are struggle with their accuracy and reading defenses. This isn’t a cheap shot, it’s reality.
“He has all the ingredients in place to be a great quarterback.”
He does? Accuracy, field vision and pocket presence are three of the most important aspects of NFL quarterbacking, and he struggles in all three areas.
Jets fans can only hope that their owner is a little more realistic in private meetings with his football brass.
This isn’t to say Sanchez can’t improve, but this quote was a little much.
