Madison – The Jets got back to work today in preparation for their game in Pittsburgh. A couple of things to get into today in Website Whispers . . .
I don’t know how much he will help the Jets. I can’t see the future. But man does Austin Seferian-Jenkins look the part – a perfectly proportioned 6-5, 262-pounds. He carries the weight so well.
And the Jets have been working him very hard since his arrival.
“I’m sore man – you guys work hard here,” Seferian-Jenkins said in the locker room.
If he can stay on the straight-and-narrow, he can really help the Jets. He’s huge and runs really well for his size. He played basketball at the University of Washington early on. This is the Pac-12 we are talking about – a good basketball conference, so that shows the kind of athlete we are talking about.
And it should be pointed out, he had shaky quarterbacking late in his college career, and his two plus years in Tampa Bay.
If this guy had been playing with Tom Brady or Drew Brees his first two years in the league, guys who see the field so well, and throw to tight ends a ton, we might be having a different conversation about him right now.
Granted there have been some off-the-field issues, but I’m just saying from a football standpoint, it was hard for him to consistently show what he can do with the quarterbackking he received his last year at Washington, and his first few years in the NFL.
Look, I know it’s hard to say Fitz is a big upgrade considering what went on the last two weeks, but if Fitz can get back to his 2016 form, spreading the ball around with aplomb, Seferian-Jenkins could be a boon to the Jets offensive attack . . .
The Jets really need to focus on the job at hand – beating Pittsburgh and nothing else.
Jets WR Brandon Marshall commented today on the Odell Beckham situation with the Giants – “Those guys over there need to be careful. They don’t need to be speaking out in their teammate. They need to keep it in-house because they could lose him. I’m being honest. They need to rally behind him and give him the support he needs and keep that stuff in-house, whether good or bad. Whether they like it or not, he’s the best player on that team.”
Don’t the Jets have enough of their own problems to deal with right now without one of their best players jumping into the Beckham situation. What does that have to do with beating Pittsburgh?
And other day, the Jets’ rookie linebacker commented on the Colin Kaepernick situation and how he had issues with the police in his life
Newsday headline – “Jets rookie Jordan Jenkins has mixed feelings about police.”
He talked about when he was pulled over once in Georgia and it didn’t go well.
And he also backed Kaepernick, who started the anthem movement.
“The most ignorant thing I’ve ever seen somebody say was: If Colin Kaepernick doesn’t like his country, he needs to leave,” Jenkins said. “Why would you tell somebody to leave? Obviously, he doesn’t hate the country. He doesn’t like the state of the country. And he wouldn’t be doing what he’s doing if he didn’t love the country so much and wanted to move on and be better.”
I have no idea whether Kaepernick loves the country or not.
But the point here is, this is a rookie third-round linebacker – why is he going there? Stay in your lane.
I’m not against freedom speech, not at all, but maybe I’m old-school. To me rookies should be seen, not heard.
So you have Marshall critiquing a start player on the crosstown rival, and a rookie linebacker analyzing the police and supporting Kaepernick.
As Belichick would say, “Just do your job.”
Can you imagine a player on the Patriots doing a dissertation on Odell Beckham, especially with his own team sitting at 1-3?
Can you imagine a Patriots rookie analyzing the police?
Todd, tell you players to focus on one thing, and one thing only, the next Jets’ opponent.
