Nashville – In the second quarter of the Jets win over Tennessee on Sunday, Jets nickelback Jarvis Brownlee made a great run stop, shooting off the edge to tackle Titans RB Tony Pollard after a two-yard gain.
But while making the play, he was a victim of friendly fire, colliding with a teammate and getting kicked in his calf.
He was down for several minutes, writhing in pain.
“I got whipped in my calf, and it bruised up on me bad,” Brownlee told Jets Confidential after the game in Nashville.
Jets trainers and doctors helped him to the sideline, and then he was carted into the locker room. It looked bad. His head was buried in his hands as he was driven into the locker room.
And this was a position the Jets could not afford to lose a player today, since 2026 second-round pick D’Angelo Ponds was inactive, also with a calf injury.
But then in the third quarter, it’s like, “Wait a minute, is that #2 back in the lineup?” Lo and behold, it was.
How does a guy go from hardly being able to walk, and then needing a cart to get into the locker room, to back in the lineup a quarter later?
Just ask people who know Brownlee well how this happens.
“If you ask anybody about me, anybody who knows me, bro, I’m a tough cat, bro,” Brownlee told JC. “It’s going to take a lot to get me off the field, especially with these guys.
“Like I told my head coach, ‘If it ain’t broke, I’m out there.'”
Brownlee feels he actually plays better in pain.
“My best football is when I play through pain,” Brownlee said. “I’ve been like that my whole life. This team is built on grit. It was nothing. It was me showing grit.”
It certainly was.
