After the Jets’ 38-33 loss to Las Vegas on Sunday, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick made news with something he said about his current team.
He was asked about the second-half collapse of the team’s defense.
“I think we had some bad penalties, bad mistakes,” Fitzpatrick said. “Jets being Jets.”
This quote, and stories about it, have gone viral. In fact, ESPN’s Rich Cimini posted a story on it at 7:56 PM on Sunday, and it was a lead story from when it was posted until a couple of hours ago.
The headline for Cimini’s viral story on ESPN.com: “‘Jets being Jets’: Minkah Fitzpatrick sums up team’s latest tough loss.”
That sounds like something someone from outside 1 Jets Drive would say, not somebody who works there and signed a 3-year, $40 million deal in the off-season after the team acquired him in a trade with Miami.
What he said sounds like a variation of the long-time insult hurled at the club, which they hate – “Same Old Jets.”
“Fitzpatrick calmly explained the second-half downfall of the defense, culminating in a zinger that, in some ways, has been resonating for many years,” Cimini wrote.
The missed tackle on a 63-yard TD by the Dolphins WR Caleb Douglas in the Jets loss to Miami was that “Jets being Jets”
It almost sounded like he was speaking from the perspective of a player on another team, not his current one, as if he were still on the Pittsburgh Steelers or Dolphins.
It’s hard to argue that, even with the Jets’ struggles, a quote like this from a current player is rather unusual.
