A couple of items today. The behavior of one Jet is mind-boggling. That is a good word. And also, if they do make the move, and it doesn’t work out, there will be an amnesia epidemic . . .
One thing you have to realize about people that ask for quarterback changes. They are almost never accountable when it doesn’t work out. They go into the Witness Protection Program.
They push and push and push for a change, and when it doesn’t work out, they get amnesia.
Who gives the Jets a better chance to win against Los Angeles?
Todd Bowles believes that is Ryan Fitzpatrick. I agree.
For all this warts, he wasn’t the main reason the Jets lost to Miami. He did some good things. He did some bad things.
But he put them up late in the fourth quarter, and then the Dolphins #2 kick returner ran back a kick for a touchdown.
I’m not a Fitzpatrick apologist. I’m a realist. The NFL QB landscape is terrible right now. Terrible!
The job is incredibly hard, and there are VERY few guys who are elite. The lack of elite quarterback is one of the reasons, along with perhaps Colin Kaepernick, too many penalties, game that run too long and so forth, for the NFL’s rating dip.
Is Sam Bradford elite? Is Jay Cutler elite? Is Carson Wentz elite (yet)? Is Tyrod Taylor elite? Is Colin Kaepernick elite? Is Carson Palmer elite (anymore)? Is Brock Osweiler elite? Is Jameis Winston elite? Is Joe Flacco elite? Is Cody Kessler elite? Is Trevor Siemian elite? Is Case Keenum elite?
I could go on, but I don’t want to bore you.
You get my point.
So many people are delusional when it comes to the NFL QB landscape. It’s terrible. Even with his shortcomings, are any of the QB’s above really better than Fitzpatrick?
Watching the last two and half games, Fitz did a lot of solid things. Were there mistakes? No doubt.
Most of the time, Fitz does the right thing. Every once in a while that is a play that makes you pull your hair out. But you know what, you look at the guys I listed above (and I could go longer), and the fans are those teams are subjected to the same thing.
The position is so freakin hard, and very few guys have it mastered.
Do you really think Bryce Petty, who never has started an NFL game, and is still weaning himself off the simplistic Baylor spread offense, gives them a better chance to win against Los Angeles? The Rams have a very good defense, and an excellent defensive coordinator (Gregg Williams).
Todd Bowles owes it to his players and coaches to play Fitz against the Rams, and try to get to 4-6, which is still in contention in a watered-down AFC. Those AFC West teams are going to start beating the heck out of each other over the last seven weeks and come back to the pack. Are the Jets a playoff longshot. Of course? But at least try to get to 4-6 at the bye and give it a shot.
Now if the Jets lose to Los Angeles, and fall to 3-7, it’s Petty time after the bye-week. That is a no-brainer.
Giving Petty two weeks to prepare for his first start would be ideal . . .
This Mo Wilkerson situation blows my mind. Maybe I have different sensibilities than him.
How do you sign a five-year, $86 million contract, with $53.5 million guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $17.2 million, and blow off team walk through and meetings? That is beyond the pale.
How does he look himself in the mirror?
He obviously has a different world-view than me and many others.
I’d love to ask him what he’s thinking. And I will.
Clearly he owns the Jets now. The contract has so much guaranteed money, he now controls them. He’s beyond reproach.
Bowles can bench him for his behavior, and there can be some small fines, but most of that $53.5 million is going in his back account, barring a league suspension, which has never happened to him.
Why is he doing this? Why is he doing this to his fellow Elizabeth, New Jersey-native Todd Bowles? Why is he doing this to his fellow Temple Owl Todd Bowles? Why is he doing this to his teammates?
I’m going to be doing a lot of digging on this one moving forward, and I will let you guys and gals know what I find out.
I find his behavior mind-boggling.
The ink if barely dry on his new $17.2 million-a-year contract, and he’s acting this way?
What gives?
Unreal.
