Bizarre situation to say the least. We will see how this all turns out, but it’s not what the Jets were looking for . . .
Darrelle Revis is being investigated for his alleged involvement in a street fight in Pittsburgh last weekend. According to a witness, two men were knocked unconscious in the brawl.
Revis could be facing charges of robbery, terror threats and aggravated assault.
Two men told police they were punched by Revis after a heated argument. A witness said the two men were knocked unconscious.
Revis lawyer told ESPN his client also needed medical attention.
One of the men reportedly was recording Revis on his cell phone and wouldn’t stop. The incident occurred at 2:43 a.m. Sunday on Pittsburgh’s South Side.
The part of town this unfortunate incident occurred has a lot of bars and nightclubs, so it’s possible alcohol might have been involved. We will see.
Look, I’m not going to indict Revis in this article. Due process is very important.
But like I’ve said over and over, we are going to find out a lot of about Mike Maccagnan’s leadership this off-season, and how he handles Revis will tell us a lot about the his alpha qualities.
Maccagnan can’t take a milquetoast approach to this off-season. He needs to be no-nonsense and make all the tough moves necessary with pure football in mind and nothing else.
Revis needs to go, and the Jets can’t worry about legacy, public relations or whatever. It needs to be about pure football.
There is no way around it – Revis isn’t a very good player anymore. It doesn’t matter what he’s done in the past. All that matters is what he can do for them now, and that isn’t much.
Revis made $17 million guaranteed last year. That is $1 million per week. The NFL regular season is 17 weeks with each team getting a bye-week. That is astonishing money considering how little he contributed.
He played like somebody making the league minimum. I don’t mean to be flippant or disrespectful. I’m just keeping it real.
And this talk that they might move him to safety in 2017, because of his lost speed, is tomfoolery. Why would you move a veteran cornerback to safety who shied away from tackling last season? You really need to embrace tackling at safety, one of the most physical positions in the sport.
The Jets GM needs a monster off-season, and I’m not talking about splashy moves to make headlines (like the Revis’ signing). I’m talking about rock solid moves based on bottom line football logic and nothing else.
Revis needs to go. He was bad on the field, and was resented in the locker room due to how much he made, and how little he contributed.
While due process is important, and I’m not indicting Revis here, if he is guilty of anything in this ugly incident, that certainly makes Mr. Coffee’s decision a lot easier. It’s time to move one.
But honestly, it shouldn’t even take this incident to dictate releasing Revis, because from a football standpoint it’s time to move.
Maccagnan show us what you’ve got.
Show us you are tougher executive than your press conferences would lead people to believe.
