Florham Park – With rookie Kenyon Sadiq out after minor groin surgery, Jets reserve tight end Jelani Woods took advantage of the extra reps at Thursday’s OTA practice.
Woods was prolific in today’s practice, catching passes from various quarterbacks.
Woods is right out of central casting to play tight end at 6-7, 253 pounds and 34-inch arms, which help him win the leverage game as a blocker. He’s a terrific blocker who is like having an extra offensive tackle. He also has 4.61 speed, so he can threaten all parts of the field.
Woods is also very comfortable in the Jets’ new offense under coordinator Frank Reich for good reason.
In 2022, Woods played under Reich for a year in Indianapolis,
You could tell, watching the UVA product in today’s practice, that he’s comfortable in the Jets’ new system, and Reich had no issue dialing up plays for a player he liked coming out of college and was instrumental in drafting in the third round of the 2022 draft.
For backup players in the NFL, it’s so important to show your wares when you are get reps, which can be scant at times for reserves.
Not putting Woods in Canton, but to his credit, he did a good job taking advantage of getting additional reps on Thursday.
