A heaping helping of TC Whispers you won’t want to miss . . .
I know it’s not cool to say this with Twitter elites, but WR Jehu Chesson isn’t bad. He had a nice one-handed catch on a deep pass down the sideline from Sam Darnold.
He has an uplifting story by the way, escaping Liberia during a civil war to Sierra Leone, and then St. Louis . . .
You have to give WR Lawrence Cager a lot of credit. He returned really fast from a knee injury suffered a few days ago. He realizes you can’t make the club in the tub, and is showing the team he’s willing to play hurt. This is a player who was signed as an undrafted free agent, but is more of a middle round talent. He has a huge catching radius at 6-5, 220 . . .
Frank Gore is a freak of nature. Watching him, you would never know he’s 37. There was a run today where he shot through an open hole like he was shot out of cannon. I don’t know how he does it after all these years at wear-and-tear at perhaps the most physically demanding position in all of football . . .
Rookie guard Cameron Clark had a rough day. Before he left practice with a knee issue, he got into a brawl in the OL-DL drill. Not sure who he has brawling with. Speculation points to Foley Fatukasi. In this fight, Clark threw a haymaker . . .
Jamison Crowder has been almost “uncoverable” this summer, if that’s a word. He has been giving the Jets corners fits all camp . . .
DE Bryce Huff continues to flash as a pass rusher. He beat OT Jared Hilbers a couple of times in the OL-DL drill. I was wondering why he went undrafted. Watching him this summer, clearly teams made a mistake. This was a draftable player . . .
As I have written many times, and it’s not rocket science, that whenever there is a good play in football practice, there is a usually a bad play to go along with it.
Sam Darnold hit new Jets receiver Donte Moncrief deep down the left sidelines for a long gain. Obviously this is a good offensive play for the Jets.
The pass was actually a little underthrown, so it kind of turned into one of those back shoulder throws that kind of catches the cornerback off guard.
But the corner on this play, Bless Austin, kind of lost track of the ball, so this was the bad part of the play for the Jets. Austin needs to be more cognizant of where the ball is . . .
Not even sure how this play turned out, but it’s not even the point. On a play, Jon Harrison pancaked Fatukasi. The DT needs to work on staying off the ground, a bad thing for defensive linemen . . .
Some feel the Jets have had bad injury luck this summer, but you could actually look at it the other way. Yes, they have had a number of players sidelined, but they have dodged some bullets with the severity of a lot of these injuries.
For instance, RB La’Mical Perine and OT Conor McDermott. When Perine got hurt on Saturday when he was tackled by LB Frankie Luvu, and was carted off, it looked very serious, but it might just turn out to be a few weeks. It’s a low-ankle sprain, not the dreaded high-ankle sprain. When McDermott went down with a knee injury early in camp, it looked very severe, but he’s already back (with a knee brace). Denzel Mims and Pierre Desir suffered hamstring injuries early in camp, and both returned today. Jabari Zuniga suffered a calf injury early in camp, and he was back on the field today in a limited basis.
So my point is simple – yes, they have had a lot of injuries, but no season-enders, at least so far. Most of the injuries have been short-term.
