A lot going on in the World of the Jets, so let’s not waste any time and let’s dig into some of the matters at hand . . .
Observing Ryan Fitzpatrick last night after the game, in the clubhouse, this is what I saw.
As you know he has a torn ligament in the thumb area of his left hand.
He had full use of his other four fingers – full flexion.
He just couldn’t do anything with this left thumb.
This is a matter of the pain going down, the inflammation going down, and coming up with a brace he can play with.
He was wearing a spica splint on the thumb as a left the stadium.
That didn’t look like something he could play with. It was too cumbersome.
Jets doctors Ken Montgomery, Andrew Willis and Damien Martins were huddling in the Jets trainer’s room with Fitzpatrick working on a plan. There were a lot of skull sessions going on in there.
It will be very interesting to see how this turns out at the end of the week with Geno Smith nursing a left shoulder injury after the that big hit by David Amerson scrambling.
We will keep you posted as the week progresses?
Right now, the leading candidate to start for the Jets vs. Jacksonville is Bryce Petty. They will keep it real simple and have him manage the game.
Montgomery, Willis and Martins not only had to design a hand brace for Fitzpatrick, but for Dexter McDougle who also has a left hand injury.
He left the stadium with a brace on it, and also sprained his ankle.
From what I hear from the clubhouse, McDougle was having problems dealing with the jam as the gunner on punt coverage, because he was essentially using one hand. Obviously that isn’t good when handling the jam.
Tight end Kellen Davis, who is doing a heck of a job as blocker for the Jets, and caught a touchdown, also had a left hand/wrist issue, and he left with a wrap.
Jets have a left hand injury epidemic.
Davis should be fine.
Very underrated signing by the Jets.
He is a superb blocking tight end.
This guy is right out of central casting to be an NFL tight end 6-6, 265 with very little body fat – he carries the weight amazing well. Let’s put it this way, if he retired, he might not have to lose weight. He’s a specimen, And when he came out of Michigan State, he ran a 4.59 forty. That is outstanding for his size.
This guy is a Jimmy Graham-type athlete, who could be a superstar at tight end. The problem is he’s displayed very inconsistent hands during his career.
But he showed his ability on that touchdown.
And he’s been a heck of a blocker for the Jets – so many of Chris Ivory’s big runs he had one of the key blocks. I will document what I’m talking about in a future post.
Good signing . . .
David Carr obviously played well against the Jets, but let’s not put him in Canton just yet.
Almost every pass he threw against the Jets was a one-read throw – easy stuff, like from back at his days at Fresno State.
There wasn’t a ton of processing going on.
49ers offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave called a masterful game.
And then you throw in how poorly the Jets secondary played, and the limited pass rush, it was like he was playing flag football
Actually what it was like was college, like Bryce Petty experienced at Baylor. Art Briles one-read calls, and Petty just faded back and threw to his main target, setting records.
So often Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie gave too much cushion, which it was so easy to play pitch-and-catch. The Jets need to consider benching Cromartie, but I don’t know if Todd Bowles is one of those coaches who would bench a big-name starter. We will see. As for Revis, he is playing like he wants to stay off Sportscenter. What I mean by that is he’s giving up a lot of passes, let’s say in the 8-18 yard range because he’s playing pretty far off. 8-18 yard plays don’t make Sportscenter – long plays do. Revis doesn’t run as well as he used it, and he is doing everything in his power to avoid the big one, but to the detriment of quick cut plays underneath and hitch routes (when the receiver pretends he’s taking up field but cuts it off short.)
Carr can make all the throws and has a quick release, so this was an ideal landscape for him.
When he faces a team like the Denver Broncos, he’s not going to be able to play throw and catch like this.
The NFL doesn’t work like that every week.
