New Jersey – I have a lot of different things to get into today on a number of different topics and players. Let’s get into it . . .
I kind of like this Robby Anderson, an undrafted free agent wide receiver out of Temple.
He’s got very good speed (ran under 4.4 at his Pro Day), and is very smooth in and out of his breaks. It’s going to be hard for him to make it, but I think there is talent to work with here.
He could use a year on the practice squad. He needs to get a lot stronger (just 8 reps of 225), so an NFL red-shirt year might be in order . . .
To his credit, Brandon Marshall is very giving to young receivers, constantly giving them pointers.
Last Wednesday (an open practice to the media), Robbie Anderson ran a deep out and Marshall instructed him to give the QB more room to work with. In other words, don’t cut so close to the sidelines . . .
I like Dakota Dozier as a guard, but I don’t know about this center thing. And he was getting a lot of work at center last week.
Here is the problem IMO – the center-quarterback exchanges.
I just think that when your starting center is a righty (Nick Mangold), when a backup center comes in and is delivering lefty snaps, it messes up the quarterbacks a little because the snap is coming from a different angle.
And if you recall last year, when Mangold hurt his neck, after toying with the idea of starting Dozier, they went with Wesley Johnson, a righty snapper, and the tough transition for the quarterback was the reason why . . .
A big question for the Jets is who will start opposite Darrelle Revis at cornerback.
Last week at practice, Darrelle Revis (wrist) wasn’t there, so Dee Milliner, Buster Skrine and Marcus Williams were rotating at the two starting spots.
All three of these guys are vying for the job opposite Revis.
I’m going with either Milliner or Williams, with Williams having the edge.
Dude, Williams had six picks last year in a reserve role, and three of the interceptions were game-clinching thefts. He had 21 picks at North Dakota State. They guy has superb balls skills.
There is a lot of talk about Skrine being a strong candidate for the job.
I think this is window-dressing. I just think that Todd doesn’t want to insult Buster by excluding him for the competition. He might take that as a personal affront.
Buster Skrine is best served by playing in the slot.
And honestly, he needs to play better than he did last year. He gave up way too many receptions. Perhaps his second year in Todd’s system he will be more comfortable. Too often last season, he was a tick late with the route recognition, and guys cut away from him . . .
Last week, Bryce Petty had a miscommunication on a bubble screen to Eric Decker and it ended up getting picked off. They weren’t on the same page on where the throw was supposed to be.
Look, I’m not picking on Petty. I’m not. I’m just saying he needs another year. That isn’t an insult. That is they way it used to before we became an instant gratification society.
As far as I’m concerned, the Jets should spend the next two years developing Petty and Christian Hackeberg. Two years, not one, and see what you have in 2018. Let’s Ryan Fitzpatrick handle the starting job the next two seasons, develop these two kids the right way, and let Fitz hand the baton to the better candidate in 2018.
