The Jets battled hard, but fell short in their loss to New England today. Let’s get into a few things . . .
Jets run defense once again wasn’t great with the Patriots rushing 25 times for 118 yards. The numbers could have been a lot work, but they are a pass-first team.
Mo Wilkerson had just one tackle. He was playing hurt and it showed. The $17 million-a-year contract hasn’t worked out particularly well so far for the Jets.
To the Jets’ credit, they did try to change things up a little, mixing in Ed Stinson and Mike Pennel more, but that didn’t help much. Stinson didn’t look good, and Pennel had just one tackle.
So this problem continues.
Something needs to change here. This is getting ridiculous . . .
The fact that the Jets-Patriots game was close wasn’t a surprise to New England.
I heard from a league source that the Patriots felt entering this game that this game would be tough, and they just wanted to get out of there with a win . ..
The best formula to beat the Patriots is to have a consistently great pass rush throughout the game and get a lot of sacks and hits on Tom Brady.
You saw that in both of the New York Giants Super Bowl wins, and Denver’s win in the AFC Championship game. You have to hit him early and often.
The Jets finished today’s game with no sacks. Zero. It’s very hard to beat Brady’s Patriots with this kind of pass rush.
Aside from their offensive line playing well, the Patriots running backs did a good job of blocking.
Patriots radio analyst Scott Zolak felt that running back James White was one of the Patriots MVP’s in this game for his blocking . . .
Jets wide receiver Robbie Anderson needs to do a better job of catching in traffic, and also do a better job of coming back to the football to help the quarterback . . .
Jets had just 74 yards on 24 carries today.
So for the second straight week, the Jets had issues running the ball and stopping the run. It’s hard to win with that combination.
Sometimes Wesley Johnson has issues with big nose tackles since he’s a little undersized center, and this can hurt the Jets ability to run up the middle at times . . .
People are always speculating on who the Jets quarterback will be next year.
But you know what, it’s not out of the question it will be Josh McCown.
He continues to play well, why not? Today, he went 31 of 47 for 354 yards with two touchdowns (and two interceptions).
McCown is a young 38. She showed on a 16-yard scramble has the speed you usually see from a much younger quarterbacks.
If he’s healthy, there is no reason he shouldn’t be back the way he’s playing.
And if the Jets pick a quarterback in the first round next year, he can be a good mentor to that player, and start until that guy is ready.
Or until Christian Hackenberg is ready.
It’s foolish to rule out McCown for next year. Drew Brees is the same age, and you saw 40-year-old Tom Brady today.
If you are healthy, and still have the arm strength, you can play QB in that age-bracket. Mentally, you are on top of everything at that stage of the game.
