SUNY Cortland – The Jets had a “scrimmage” tonight in the Cortland football stadium before a sold-out crowd of 9.200. Let’s take a look at some of the action . . .
For all his moves he makes, Mike Tannenbaum has done an average job with the Jets’ backup offensive line the last couple of years.
How do you have a backup center who snaps as poorly as Caleb Schlauderaff?
This is a guy who didn’t play one down at center in college. The Jets have had him work at it in practice over the last year.
There are so many centers out there, why do you have to train a guy who has never played it before. THIS IS THE NFL!
The guy is a good left guard, but this center experiment isn’t going well.
On one series, he stepped on Tebow’s foot, and the quarterback stumbled away from center, and then there was a high shotgun snap shortly thereafter.
He also had a high snap to Mark Sanchez.
We know the Jets starting line was missing three starters, so there was an excuse there. But just like last preseason, the backup line is weak.
You have to feel bad for Greg McElroy. On so many plays, he barely has time to breathe back there.
And guess what almost happened again – McElroy almost got hurt again in the summer. Remember last year he broke his hand in a preseason game due to poor protection. Well tonight in the scrimmage, Aaron Maybin broke into the backfield, and hit his right shoulder as he was throwing. He was seen swinging the shoulder over the next few minutes to loosen it up.
There is no way around it. Tannenbaum has done a poor job dealing with offensive line depth. He probably should have made more of an effort to re-sign Robert Turner, but he was so happy with his trade for Schlauderaff, he let Turner leave St. Louis.
After one too many bad plays at center, “Guge” moved Slauson to center, and Schlauderaff to left guard.
And that is the way it should be.
Slauson is a better backup center than Schlauderaff . . .
The Jets development of Ducasse continues to be a head-scratcher.
Remember how they were going to finally let him stay at one position this year – left guard. Well guest what, tonight he was playing right guard.
I understand they were missing some players, but still, stop moving him around! Plug in somebody else at right guard.
Early in the scrimmage, Mo Wilkerson beat Ducasse with an inside move, and got in Sanchez’s face. The quarterback did a nice job of getting rid of the ball for a short completion, but Mark had almost no time to throw on this play.
But I’m telling you, if they leave this guy at one position, he can be a player. He can be a brute out there. On another play he pulled to the right side, and pancaked Wilkerson.
However, he needs to stay a left guard. Remember, he was a left tackle at UMass, so he’s most comfortable on that side.
If you keep moving a young player between the left and right side, you can mess up their technique. The technique is different on the left and right side . . .
Antonio Allen was projected to be a second or third round pick by several draft experts.
He ended up slipping to the seventh round.
Well guess what – he’s playing like a second or third round safety.
The guy just keep making plays.
He had a run stop on Bilal Powell on the line, and shortly thereafter stopped a pitch to Shonn Greene to the right side on the line (with help from Marcus Dixon).
He also had a real nice PD on the short left side on a pass to Santonio Holmes . . .
Ryan Steed was one of the Jets’ top undrafted free agent signings, and the Furman corner hasn’t disappointed.
He had a real nice PD on a quick out to DaMarcus Ganaway from McElroy . . .
Jay Richardson was man among boys playing against backup linemen. You can tell the former Oakland Raider knows what he’s doing out there . . .
Wayne Hunter sat out the scrimmage with a lower back strain, and he was definitely walking like a guy whose back is bothering him . . .
What is it about the Patrick Turner-Darrelle Revis matchup that Sanchez likes so much? He threw into that matchup twice with no success . . .
