Florham Park area – It’s time for a heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers including notes on Rex-Gate, Manish, McElroy and more . . .
Greg McElroy was feeling much better today after the bad headaches that he had on Thursday.
Even though he’s feeling better, he clearly shouldn’t play this week.
Earlier in the week he had an increased heart rate, which is a telltale sign of a concussion.
While McElroy is clearly bummed out about missing a chance to show his wares in Buffalo, it’s not going to hurt his chances much moving forward.
From what we hear, Woody Johnson is a fan of McElroy.
Manish Mehta had an interesting report before the Jets announced their QB decision on the Wednesday following the Arizona game.
He said Mike Tannenbaum and Tony Sparano wanted Mark Sanchez to start, but Johnson wanted McElroy.
It turns out the Jets stayed with Sanchez for a couple of more games.
But from what we hear, after the Tennessee debacle, the owner made it clear he wanted McElroy to start the last two games.
Obviously that turned into just one game due to the concussion, but it looks like McElroy has a fan in Johnson.
It remains to be seen what the next GM thinks of McElroy. The current GM Mike Tannenbaum is expected to be replaced.
Who knows if the next GM will be a fan of McElroy.
But considering the Jets are going to be $20 million over the cap next year, they really don’t have much money for a free agent quarterback.
Plus, it’s not a great free agent class. It’s also not a great quarterback draft. So McElroy could be the guy next year, when you consider the owner’s mindset about him, the cap problems and the poor free agent and college quarterback classes.
Plus, he could be just the kind of game-manager, who does a good job of avoiding mistake, that Rex could trust to compliment the ground- and-pound and strong defense . . .
Manish Mehta took some criticism from some fans and reporters for not being at Jets camp today to take the heat for his controversial story about Rex wanting to get fired if he the organization doesn’t make certain changes.
That isn’t a legitimate criticism. He’s rarely there on Friday.
And honesty, considering how many people he’s ticked off this year, you have to give him credit for generally being there to take the heat. He doesn’t duck. He’s not Mike Lupica, who writes hatchet jobs, and doesn’t face the people he rips . . .
There is so much talk about Braylon Edward’s hamstring injury, it’s actually his knee which is more of a concern.
He has been dealing with a right knee injury for most of this season, and today was wearing a full leg sleeve on that leg. The sleeve has some kind of therapeutic purpose.
And if the Jets do consider re-signing him after this year, that knee is going to need to be thoroughly evaluated. It’s been an issue, on and off, the last couple of years . . .
Damon Harrison, who had been dealing with a high ankle sprain, is now close to 100 percent, so it’s time to see what he can do.
The Jets need to see what they have him in – he could have a significant role next year. Sione Pouha has an shaky back and could be a cap casualty, and Kenrick Ellis is very inconsistent.
Harrison moves very well for a 330-pounder . . .
Rex Ryan probably had his most impressive press conference of the year today.
He basically spent the entire presser telling the assembled crowd, and the viewers on the team’s website, how much he loves being the Jets’ coach, and how he doesn’t want to go anywhere else. This was in light of the Daily News article saying he might want to get out of here.
He has had so many press conference this year where he was doing his Ben Vereen tap-dancing act, but this press conference seemed more from the heart, and it was very effective, and clearly helped his “Q” rating with the fans.
