New Jersey – It’s time for a heaping helping of Jets Whispers entering the weekend. Let’s get this underway . . .
The release of Santonio Holmes by the Chicago Bears should not come as a surprise, and not just because of his moodiness.
One of the reasons they signed him was due to an injury to receiver Marquess Wilson who broke his clavicle in August.
The Bears love Wilson, and he was going to be their third receiver entering this season if not for the injury.
They put him on the short-term injured reserve in the summer, and he was activated this week.
The 6-4 Wilson gives the Bears another tall target. They think he has a big upside . . .
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed punter Jacob Schrum to their practice squad.
He was in Jets camp this summer, and gave Ryan Quigley a run for his money.
It was close.
When a team signs a punter to their practice squad, that means the regular punter is in trouble. Practice squad signings for kickers and punters are major statements about the dude at the position on the regular roster.
Schrum has a big-time leg . . .
I think the Jets are going to break this bad “games after the bye-week” streak in Buffalo.
First of all, there is a good chance the Jets would have beat the Bills if not for Geno Smith’s three picks in the first quarter.
“You and I have done a lot of games together over the last 10 years,” Rich Gannon said to Kevin Harlan. “I don’t remember having a quarterback having such a poor start to a game. I’ve been doing game for a long time and I played 17 years. I don’t remember a quarterback starting a game so poorly, do you?”
If Vick started that game, there is a good chance the Jets would have won. Those three picks set the tone for the game.
And now comes the news that the Bills will be without starting cornerback Leodis McKelvin for the Jets game. He fractured his ankle against Miami. There are thinking of putting him on IR.
This is a big blow to the Bills. McKelvin was having a very good season.
Also, QB Kyle Orton suffered a toe injury in Miami. It remains to be seen how this impacts his game.
On top of this, the Bills’ offensive line is bad, and that is one reason they lost to Miami.
Even in the blowout win over the Jets, the Bills had major protection issues. We know their right tackle spot is shaky with rookie Seantrel Henderson starting, but also both guard spots aren’t great with rookie Cyril Richardson and Eric Pears (who the Jets dominated in the first game). But surprisingly, another problem in the first Jets-Bills game was center Eric Wood, who has a good reputation.
So with the Jets’ talented front, expect a dominating performance by the Jets against this patchwork, suspect offensive line.
It think the Jets win in Buffalo next week . . .
Did you know Leon McFadden is on the 49ers’ active roster?
He was a cornerback the Jets claimed on waivers from Cleveland on the final cut-down, but was sent backing after a couple of weeks.
I know the Browns thought he was pretty bad, and the Jets weren’t impressed.
But this shows you the dearth of good cornerbacks on the street.
