East Rutherford – Rex has a problem that is impacting the results, and it’s related to some decisions he made that nobody is talking about.
And I hate writing about this.
I really do.
These are men with families.
But aside from the defensive line, this is a poorly coached team defensively.
Karl Dunbar is a rock star, so leave him out of this.
I don’t think there is any way around this – the Jets’ secondary needs to be coached better.
I understand there are injuries, but there are too many blown coverages.
The secondary coach is a terrific man, but if you look at his resume, he was mostly a high school coach. He spent just one year in college, at Fresno State, before the Jets hired him to coach the secondary.
Perhaps that is too much of a quantum leap.
The Jets should have gone out and hired the best secondary coach on the planet when they had an opening. This is the NFL. This is New York. Go out and find the best guy, and pay him to top dollar.
On the sidelines during games, on each side of Rex, are two old friends of his. Is this cronyism? I don’t know. I just don’t know about this pair of bench coaches, if you will.
I like both men, but I’m not sure those are the best two guys to lean on during the game.
Like I said, this article pains me to write. I don’t like messing with people’s jobs.
I hate it.
When the Jets lost linebacker coach Brian Van Gorder, they hired a guy in his early 30’s, who was a quality control coach to take his place.
Look, I don’t know if Ira, or whoever, was pulling in the purse strings on Rex’s coaching budget.
Rex is a good defensive coach, but he can’t do it all.
While he deals with the defensive group as a whole in meetings and on the practice field, they spend a lot of time meeting with their position coaches.
Rex can’t be omnipresent. He’s just one guy. He can’t be in the position meetings.
I just don’t know how well these positions, aside from the defensive line, are being coached.
The proof is in the pudding.
The Jets have been blowing assignments on defense all season.
As much as I hate to say it because we are talking about human beings, In the NFL, I think you need to go out and hire the best position coaches humanly possible – not try to save money, not try to help out friends.
That is all . . .
When I saw Antonio Allen starting at corner, I thought maybe Phillip Adams was still dealing with a hamstring injury.
I’m not saying Adams is Deion Saunders, but he has done some good things.
Allen is clearly not a corner. He’s not fast enough, and has given up too many big plays.
Why on earth would you go backwards?
I asked Adams why he didn’t play today, and told me it wasn’t injury related, and it was a coach’s decision.
Allen gave up a pair of touchdowns today, to WR Robert Woods and TE Scott Chandler.
Why on earth would you go back to starting Allen at cornerback?
Strange stuff going on around here . . .
Rex and players talk about how surprised they are about the bad games because they team practiced well.
Let’s put an end to this talk right now.
NFL practices aren’t real football. There is little contact, no tackling, no sacks. It’s flag football. It’s not a great barometer for Sunday.
So take this talk with a grain of salt . . .
