Jace Amaro feels the Jets lacked accountability last year. Rex Ryan responded to Sports Illustrated, “He’s full of s—.”
“He’s not really playing around with everyone being late,” Amaro said of Todd Bowles. “We had an issue with that last year. Guys just weren’t accountable last year as much as they could be. I think that’s the biggest thing. [Bowles is] making sure everyone’s gonna be 100 percent in or he’s not going to be on the team.”
Here is the deal. There is no grey area here. Either there was an issue with guys being late or there wasn’t. We know that Geno Smith and Calvin Pryor were late for meetings. That is already documented. I will research if there were others, but those are two in the books.
Rex has a tendency to kill the messenger.
Remember when Greg McElroy talked about how toxic the locker room was in 2011. He was right, but Rex never forgave him, and actually said to him on the practice field the following summer, “McElroy, you bleeped him.”
Should a third string quarterback have said what he did? Probably not, but it was true.
Rex pretended like he didn’t know all the issues Santonio Holmes was causing in 2011. Maybe he was burying his head in the and sand and pretended not to know.
Last year, CB Josh Thomas, after getting released, said he wasn’t coached during his time with the Jets.
Rex was totally dismissive of that.
I think Thomas was on to something. Injuries or no injuries, that secondary wasn’t coached well as it could have been the last two years.
And now he says Amaro is full of it.
I think Amaro was on to something.
Look, I’m not expecting Rex to come out and support all these comments publicly, but the man has a big problem dealing with reality.
If you have a head coach who so often won’t deal with reality, how do you expect to have long-term success?
It’s like when Dennis Thurman had that incident with a 28-year-old girl at a Morristown bar last summer. It was a big story on TMZ with a picture of Thurman looking like he was going to slap the girl.
Rex was asked if he was going to address the incident with Thurman.
He responded, “I don’t need to.”
Yes you do! A 59-year-old-coach behaving that way, hitting on a 28-year old, and then acting in a fashion suitable
for TMZ. Yes you need to address it, and yes you need to tell the public you are going to address it.
If I was Rex, I would not have taken Thurman with me to Buffalo. It was time to move on, or take a respite from the coach until some things changed. I will leave it at that.
Ryan told the Buffalo press today during queries about the Amaro quote – “I’ve never had a problem with players trusting me. You can’t hide. You either are who are, and they’ll find out.”
What the heck does that mean, and what does that have to do with players being on time?
This is just babble.
The Jets did the right thing moving on.
And Amaro isn’t full of you know what.
What was it that Jack Nicholson once said in a movie – “You can’t handle the truth.”
Until Rex starts dealing with reality, the cold hard facts, he’s going to have a hard-time taking his coaching ability to the next level.
