A lot going on today in Jets Country. Let’s take a closer look at the big announcement by Adam Schefter.
Schefter announced today that the Jets are going to hire Charlie Casserly as a consultant if they fire their GM and coach.
This is a terrific move.
The former Washington Redskins and Houston Texans GM is a smart, smart football man. He’s also a straight-shooter. He will tell Woody and Ira the cold, hard facts. He won’t sugar-coat things.
Casserly is the guy, despite a tremendous amount of public and media pressure, picked Mario Williams over Vince Young in the 2006 draft. This was the right move. You don’t govern by public opinion polls in football.
So he’s a guy who deals with reality, not hype. The perfect guy to help Woody and Ira get this right.
There is no question the Jets need to make major changes.
They’ve got to get a big-time coach, a proven head coach – not a coordinator with potential who will be learning on the job the first couple of years.
Whether it’s a proven winner from the college ranks like Art Briles or Brian Kelly, or a proven winner from the pro ranks like Jim Harbaugh, that is clearly what they need at this time.
They need a head coach who is going to hold his players and assistant coaches accountable to the nth degree. If you commit a penalty, you are going to hear it from the coach. If an assistant coach isn’t coaching up a new cornerback, a mid-season arrival, he’s going to hear it from the coach.
They need a leader, a disciplinarian, a visionary – a guy that gets it across the board.
And to go along with that new head coach, they need a GM with a pure scouting and personnel background – a guy with a tremendous eye for talent.
So if the Jets make changes, having Casserly on board can certainly help them get this right. Charlie has seen so much over the years. What a terrific sage football advisor to have!
As first reported in the latest issue of Jets Confidential Magazine, the Jets brass know they have to do things differently with the interview process this time around, if they make changes.
Having Woody, Ira and Neil Glat as the interviewing committee during the GM search in 2013 wasn’t the ideal scenario. They know that now. These are all business-side people.
From what I heard from a couple of candidates, the questions weren’t great from a football-standpoint.
It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that they picked a strong cap guy, an excellent contract negotiator.
One long-time New York sports columnist said to me, “[John Idzik] spoke their language.”
So recently, I was told by a high-ranking Jets source that football people will be involved this time around.
To their credit, they learned their lesson.
And to me, Casserly is the perfect choice.
Here are the other people on the committee to choose from – Ernie Accorsi, Tony Dungy, Dennis Green, John Madden, Carl Peterson, Bill Polian and Ron Wolf.
I think Casserly is the best choice here.
Some of these other guys pushed their friends or former staffers on teams in the past.
The Jets don’t need that.
I don’t think Casserly will do this.
