The Jets have some very tough contract decisions to make and some painful cuts could be coming up. Let’s take a look . . .
It’s going to be interesting to see what happens with D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s contract situation.
He has a $14.1 million cap number this year.
That has to change. We all know that.
It would be shocking if he took a pay cut.
His base salary for this year is $8.6 million which is certainly fair for an above average left tackle.
I don’t go by those money ball websites ranking tackles. I agree with Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olson.
“These “analytics” sites are such a joke when comes to player performance,” Olson tweeted.
So I really don’t care how he was supposedly ranked.
He’s still a good player. Not perfect, but still very good and amazingly durable. He’s never missed a game.
They should extend him two years (his contract is up next year) and spread the money out over four years.
If they chose to move on, who should they turn to?
Generally, it’s hard to get franchise left tackles in the draft at 20. They are usually gobbled up in the Top 10.
A fan tweeted at me today they should go with Brent Qvale.
I watched Qvale very close the last two years in practice and preseason games.
I think he can be a very good right tackle. I don’t think he’s athletic enough for the left side. I think making him the starting left tackle would be a mistake.
If the Jets move on from Breno Giacomini for cap reasons, I think Qvale can do the job over there.
The guy I think who can do the job, and he would come cheap, is Ben Ijalana. He’s got long arms, quick feet, has a nice kick slide and is extremely bright
I think Ijalana is a bonafide left tackle. He’s currently a free agent . . .
I hate the petty semantics when it comes to writing about free agency.
I keep reading, “the Jets lost out to Philadelphia for Chris Givens.”
Who cares?
The journeyman had to pick one team or the other, and he chose Philly.
This isn’t a personal affront to the Jets. They will live to see another day.
They tendered Kenbrell Thompkins who is the more polished receiver. Givens is faster, Thompkins is the better receiver.
This isn’t a big deal.
Another case of semantics that is somewhat misleading – “Jets lost Antonio Allen in free agency to Houston today.”
How do you lose somebody you are making no effort to bring back?
Just because the guy was with you last year, doesn’t mean you lose him if he signs with another team.
Once again, this isn’t a big deal.
And I contend they didn’t lose him.
They lost him.
And I like the player. He should do well in Houston.
But there are tons of safeties on the street like Jaiquawn Jarrett.
The Jets will be fine at safety.
Their two starters are returning.
We are talking about a backup spot, and they have Dion Bailey and Ronald Martin.
I think Bailey is as good or better than Allen.
The Jets waiver claim of Bailey last year from Seattle was very smart.
The Seahawks didn’t want to get rid of him, but had a roster quandary, and tried to sneak him through to the practice squad, but told Dion they didn’t think he would make it through.
And they were right.
