Look, I understand he is a competitor and wants to play, but you also have to be a good teammate and have your teammates backs.
Before the game Geno Smith told ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters he was “getting antsy.”
What’s up with that?
That is just wrong from a team concept.
Antsy for take Ryan Fitpatrick’s job?
He can feel that way inside, but you don’t say it to a reporter.
Imagine a New England backup saying, “I’m getting antsy.”
They would end up “getting antsy” on the unemployment line.
You just don’t say stuff like that. What about that doesn’t he understand?
And this has nothing to do with whether Ryan Fitzpatrick is good or not. That is irrelevant. As a teammate, as long as he’s starting, you support him publicly.
One for all and all for one.
Todd Bowles was asked about Smith’s comment.
“I don’t have any thoughts on a backup player saying anything,” Bowles said. “They’re backups for a reason, and if they get a chance to play, they better prove themselves to be worthy of playing, regardless of who the person is.”
So what did he think of the comment?
“I didn’t think anything of it,” Bowles said.
I don’t understand him not having any thoughts on this. This kind of behavior is a problem. He should have some thoughts on it.
If you are a Jets fan, you can only hope that your coach has some thoughts on this, at least behind the scenes. Todd needs to let a young guy like this know that his comments are unacceptable.
I also mentioned how Smith wasn’t joining QB coach Kevin Patullo and Ryan Fitzpatrick as they were going on plays and formations on the computer tablet when the defense was on the field. Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty were and they were in street clothes (inactive).
I don’t get that. These are teachable moments and are helpful if you have to go into the game (which he eventually did).
I’m sorry, the backup quarterback not joining these skull sessions during the game is bad news.
And not something you see from winning programs.
I also never saw him staying after practice for extra work with the QB trio in training camp . . .
I just wonder what Todd and Mike Maccagnan were thinking when they looked at film of Buster Skrine in Cleveland, and then gave him 4-year, $25,000,000 contract with a $5,000,000 signing bonus and $13,000,000 guaranteed.
My good friend and radio co-host Vic Carucci told he, “he’s too grabby.”
Meaning he commits a lot of pass interference penalties.
Carucci worked for the Browns when Skrine played there.
And what has happened with the Jets – he’s committed a ton of penalties.
Bowles was a long-time secondary coach and Maccagnan a long-time scout. How do you look at that film and give a penalty prone-player like this $13 million guaranteed? What were they thinking?
Hey, good for Skrine, he’s a great guy.
