This is unfair to Bill Belichick and Rex Ryan, to be honest with you. Let’s look at this, and tie some lose ends on other things heading into Jets training camp . . .
There was something I wanted to get into from last week, but haven’t had a chance.
This really bothered me off, but we better get used to it, because there is an arm’s war with websites trying to get hits at all costs.
NJ.com headline – “Apparently, Bill Belichick believes he can outcoach Rex Ryan on any Thursday.”
Belichick told Robert Kraft he likes Thursday night games, with no mention of any opponents, just a general comment. Kraft mentioned this during a press conference promoting the Thursday Night Football Schedule.
“Oh, by the way, the Patriots have one Thursday night game this season: October 16 in Foxborough against the Jets,” wrote Kevin Manahan for NJ.com. “Apparently, the threat of Rex Ryan and Geno Smtih coming to Gillette Stadium during a short week hasn’t put fear into the Patriots.”
When did Belichick or Kraft say that?
They didn’t.
And honestly, while I wouldn’t fear facing a young, developing quarterback on a short week (this isn’t a shot at Geno, but just an overall statement about all young quarterbacks), I wouldn’t want to face Ryan’s defense, with his myriad of fronts and chicanery, on a short week. Facing Rex’s defense takes a lot of prep work.
But for all you that get our monthly magazine, we had a note in there about how a major New York area newspaper website is paying writers based on hits.
And this kind of headline and angle, is going to get hits.
Whether it’s fair or not.
For all you guys and gals who like to peruse the internet finding Jets news, or any sports news in general, may the buyer beware.
In this day and age, websites are going to try to suck you in with salacious headlines for stories that might not pass the smell test . . .
DeMario Davis reminded me of an old Bee-Gees song with something he said on WFAN yesterday.
“I feel like this team is more than a playoff team, honestly,” Davis said.
“More than playoff team, more than a playoff team to me,” to paraphrase the Bee Gees.
The playoff predictions are flying out of Florham Park.
In my opinion, and I’ve written about this many times, I’m not even convinced Davis should be starting next to David Harris at ILB for the Jets.
Davis is a terrific in the box linebacker against the run and as a blitzer.
But he was a disappointment in coverage last year, often tick late diagnosing his coverage assignment.
And remember, a big reason the Jets transitioned from Bart Scott to Davis last year was to improve the coverage they were getting at that spot.
It didn’t happen.
While Davis, who runs a 4.53 forty, is fast than Scott, it doesn’t matter how fast you are, if your coverage instincts are so-so.
As Bob Sutton is fond of saying, “You need to see it before you see it.”
And that is what makes Luke Kuechly so good in Carolina. He “sees it before he sees it.”
What that means is you read your keys and start heading to your assignment before the quarterback makes his throw to his target. Davis last year was what scouts like to call, “a see-and-go reactor.” This means, he would see the quarterback wind up to throw to a spot, and he would head to that spot.
So to me, I just think this player has a lot on his plate that he needs to work on to become an established player, and shouldn’t be viewed as a team spokesman just yet.
He’s such a hard worker, perhaps he will take a big step as a coverage linebacker this year. We will see.
