There was a story today, reported by a couple of media outlets, that I find bizarre.
Remember, earlier this week, Adam Schefter announced that the Jets will be hiring Charlie Casserly as a consultant if they make changes after the season.
The following note, I find pathetic.
“Casserly has reached out to former Packers GM Ron Wolf, according to a source. Wolf was the Packers general manager from 1991-2001, which included the team’s Super Bowl win in the 1996 season.” – New York Daily News.
Let me get this straight – Casserly is reaching out to other consultants on behalf of the Jets.
Can the Jets reach out to consultants on their own?
It makes it sounds like Casserly reaching out to somebody and saying, “You want to help me with this charity event?”
And perhaps I can help the Jets with the advice Wolf might give the Jets, “Hire my son.”
Elliot Wolf is the director of pro personnel with the Green Bay Packers. He is 32. He got a job with the Packers right out of college at Miami (FL).
And how about this one.
Did you know that Ron Wolf was the person that recommended the Oakland Raiders hire Reggie McKenzie as their GM in 2012?
They are 11-36 in this tenure. Under McKenzie this year, the Raiders compiled the oldest roster in the league, and started a rookie QB. What kind of plan is that?
If this is the kind of consultant that Jets want, all the power to them.
This is why the consultant thing can be very dangerous.
Last year, Tony Dungy, who is also on the NFL advisory council, pushed Tampa Bay to hire his friend Lovie Smith. How’s that working out?
Ernie Accorsi is also on advisory board, and Carolina used him last year to find a GM, and he recommended Dave Gettleman, his long-time college scouting director with the Giants.
Forget consultant for a minute. Let’s get into just advice in general.
Bill Parcells told the Jets to hire Al Groh and the Dolphins to hire Tony Sparano.
Bill Belichick pushed Rutgers coach Greg Schiano on Tampa Bay while Bill’s son was playing for the Scarlett Knights.
I was having a philosophical discussion with a Jets official recently about this.
I wasn’t giving advice. That isn’t my place as a writer.
But I just said, “Beware of consultants with agendas.”
You don’t need people telling you to hire their friends or family.
If Ron Wolf suggests they hire Elliott, I’d say, “Thanks but no thanks.”
The job of consultants isn’t to get their friends and/or family members jobs.
The job of consultants is to help the team their consulting land the best candidate possible.
Jets better be careful.
And who are on earth leaked that Casserly reached out to Ron Wolf?
If I’m the Jets, I get to the bottom on that one.
That doesn’t make them look very good.
They should be able to reach out to consultants on their own.
What’s next? It’s Wolf’s turn to reach out to another consultant. Tag, your it.
