The way the quarterbacks were split up on the Senior Bowl rosters is a little surprising from a competitive balance standpoint.
The two first-round quarterbacks – Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield – are on the same team, the North. And perhaps the third best QB – Washington State’s Luke Falk – is also on the North.
On the South are Virginia’s Kurt Benkert, Troy’s Brandon Silvers, Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta and Western Kentucky’s Mike White.
Does that make any sense to y’all?
A scout told me that one reason for this is Denver is coaching the North, and we all know John Elway is looking for a quarterback, and they pick at five. Elway is so serious about hiring a quarterback, he has the team’s former head coach, Gary Kubiak, a quarterback guru, working as a consultant assisting his search. And Kubiak is here, with Elway, watching the North’s quarterbacks like hawks on the field.
I’m watching them like a hawks also, with the Jets picking at six, and once again today, Mayfield showed the better accuracy. Don’t get me wrong, Allen makes a lot of amazing throws, and has a cannon, but there are some mixed in that sail over receiver’s heads.
Seeing Mayfield at Oklahoma, I knew he was accurate, but to see him up close on the field, his accuracy is really, really impressive. And that kind of accuracy isn’t something you can teach . . .
While other team’s coaches and general managers spoke at the Combine, the Jets weren’t available. I didn’t see Todd Bowles in Mobile, but Calvin Watkins of Newsday ran into him on Tuesday and he wouldn’t speak. He said he would be available at the combine in early March.
I saw Maccagnan standing on the sideline during Wednesday’s practice in an area the media isn’t allowed. This is the only time I saw him this week.
Look, they can do whatever they want. There are no rules about talking in the off-season, but I don’t understand the North Korean like secrecy.
Jets PR director Bruce Speight was in Mobile. I crossed paths with him at the Mobile Convention Center checking in to media day (for Senior Bowl players). Why would the PR guy be here if nobody is speaking, to act a security guard to keep people away?
The Buffalo Bills made their coach and GM available to the Buffalo press in Mobile. Both of them.
Browns GM John Dorsey, is quite a busy man right now, but he talked to the Cleveland press.
Look, I’m not complaining. I don’t feel a sense of entitlement when it comes to demanding that guys talk.
I just think there is something amiss here.
It came out recently that two Jets players were arrested (Robby Anderson and Rashard Robinson). The team also fired their offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
And where is the alpha dog to stand in front of the press and “represent” as millennials like to say.
Something else I’m wondering about is the relationship between the coach and GM. Are they on the same page? I’m starting to here rumblings in league circles about this relationship. Let me leave it at that. I think Bowles flat out refusing to play Hackenberg, at all, at the end of the season, was a case of him thumbing his nose at the GM. Mike picks the players, and Todd decides who plays. That is how the Jets power structure is set up. Why wouldn’t you let Hackenberg play at all? It’s not like Petty was lighting it up.
I’m sorry, somebody needs to stand in front of the press for a few minutes in Mobile, with SO much going on in Jets-land, and address the media.
A lot of other teams did.
