Now it looks like the decision
could come back to bite them a little.
Talking about the Jets decision to release Pierre Desir on Tuesday.
Watching the cornerbacks in practice today, Bless Austin was nowhere to be found. He is dealing with a neck injury.
If Austin can’t play, the Jets will start rookie free agent Lamar Jackson at one cornerback, along with fifth-round pick Bryce Hall,
This isn’t second-guessing on my part, bringing up the Austin injury when talking about why it was premature to release Desir.
As you all know, I wrote it was probably a mistake the other day because they also lost nickel corner Brian Poole to a knee injury, and he was put on IR. So their two most experienced, seasoned corners, were out of the picture in one fell swoop.
Not the best plan, and now with Austin out of the picture for who knows how long, the Jets could be in a little trouble at the position.
Not sure how they are going to cover Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.
Once again, not putting Desir in Canton, but not sure about the timing of this move . . .
While it’s early, it looks like the Jets have a found a good one in Denzel Mims.
Not going to get into the type of route it was for strategic reasons, but he made a real nice diving catch in today’s practice.
He has 10 catches in his first three games, and looks like he belongs. It’s pretty clear watching him in games and in practice, Jets wide receivers coaches Hines Ward and Sean Jefferson have done a nice job with him on his route-running, which has clearly improved.
The only downside of this great catch in practice was he beat one of the Jets’ new corners on this play.
But getting back to Mims, he seems to have the “it” factor, to go along with being 6-3 and running 4.3 . . .
This has been a tough season for NFL teams for a number of reasons, led by a pandemic. No off-season program, no preseason games, a bunch of players opting out or testing positive and missing games.
And some programs have somehow overcome the myriad obstacles, not just in the NFL, but in college (obviously different challenges, but also very challenging).
And others?
“We have seen some programs fall apart during the pandemic,” said one long-time NFL scout.
Having a strong culture was essential to have a fighting chance during these challenging times.
Brian Kelly, the coach of 8-0 Notre Dame, feels attention to detail is another key.
“Attention to detail is probably something, when you don’t have it, you have not done well in this environment,” said Kelly to the NFL Network.
Not looking to be controversial or ruffle any feathers, but the Jets struggling culture and poor attention to detail this challenging seasons, likely has contributed to their 0-9 record.
Yes, Joe Douglas has said repeatedly he wants to be build a strong football culture, but there is only so much he can do.
His first draft class does seem to have some solid culture guys, and good players, but a GM can’t build a strong culture by himself.
