It’s time for another edition of Dan’s Draft Notebook. With the draft starting on Thursday night, there is a lot to talk about, including Chandler Jones, Michael Floyd, Trent Richardson . . .
An NFL Network report from Jets camp just brought up Chandler Jones and Gang Green at 16.
That might be a little high for the Syracuse defensive end. An ideal scenario for the Jets would be to trade back and take him. Most people have him going at the end of the first round.
There is no question Jones is a terrific talent, but where would the Jets play him. He’s kind of a tweener right now in their system. While he’s the ideal size (6-5 1/3, 265 pounds) and arm length for 3-4 OLB, he’s lacks ideal speed (4.85). Not only doesn’t he have ideal speed, he’s a long-strider who doesn’t have a great burst coming off the edge. He’s probably a better fit at 4-3 end. Or, perhaps, you bulk him up a little, and make him a 3-4 end. He could be a candidate to play over the tight end as a strongside linebacker, but he will need to get stronger. He did only 22 reps of 225 at the combine . . .
Mike Mayock has WR Michael Floyd going to the Jets at 16.
There is no question he has talent worthy of the 16th pick, with his size, speed and toughness, but before the Jets consider pulling the trigger on this guy, the most important person in the war room will be Jets VP of security, Steve Yarnell. He has had three alcohol-related incidents, including one DUI.
Floyd showed a lot of maturity as a senior, and did a nice job in team interviews. If the Jets make this pick, it’s because Yarnell looked extensively into Floyd’s background, and is comfortable with his future.
Yarnell is a former FBI agent who Bill Parcells hired to work for the Jets in 1997 . . .
I hear that people around the Jets knew today was a day to leave Mike Tannenbaum alone. He was busy working the phones, talking trades.
Obviously the there was a lot of talk today about the Jets trading up to 4, 5 or 6 to grab Alabama RB Trent Richardson.
The rumored price to get up to one of those spots is two first round picks (2011 and 2012), and next year’s #2. That price seems to steep.
“There is so much misinformation out there that you have to separate what’s believable and what’s not,” Mike Mayock said. “I have a hard time believing the Jets are coming up to (pick No.) 4, 5 or 6 for Trent Richardson.” . . .
I participated in a few mock drafts around the country on sports talk radio shows, and I was put in a situation I didn’t expect in Jacksonville. Mississippi State’s Fletcher Cox was on the board. I picked him for the Jets.
This would be a no-brainer. Can you imagine a 3-4 end combo of Mo Wilkerson and Fletcher Cox? That would be outstanding. Cox is a 6-4, 298-pound defensive lineman who runs 4.79.
It’s unlikely he will be around, bit if he is, while defensive end isn’t necessarily a huge need for the Jets, it’s hard to pass up a talent like this . . .
There were published reports today linking Jets VP Joey Clinkscales with the Oakland Raiders. He played with new Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie at the University of Tennessee, and they are good friends.
Clinkscales is solid, but this wouldn’t be a devastating loss for the Jets with Terry Bradway still in the mix. Both have extensive experience running college scouting departments.
The Jets could just slide Bradway into Clinkscale’s role . . .
