Cortland, New York – The Jets had their annual Green-and-White scrimmage the SUNY-Cortland football stadium, and here is what I saw . . .
DeMario Davis continues his strong summer. On the first play of the scrimmage, he snuffed out a screen to Chris Johnson in the left flat, and stopped it for a loss of three . . .
Last year, Jace Amaro played a lot in the slot for Texas Tech.
Marty Morhinweg seems to like the concept.
He’s lining up a lot there with the Jets, and caught a pass for about eight yards on the first series from Geno Smith, working from the slot . . .
Antonio Allen made a lot of plays tonight, including a near pick on the first series.
Watching him in camp, and in the scrimmage, he looks poised for a big season this year.
He’s always been a force against the run, but he’s advanced light years as a pass defender since he first arrived . . .
Nickel back Jeremy Reeves looks like a real find for the Jets. He had a pick tonight, and has made a lot of plays on the ball throughout the summer. He is perfect for the slot because he’s really quick, super-tough and runs 4.27 . . .
Willie Colon jumped off-sides and was replaced for a play by Oday Aboushi for a play.
Now there is no way he’s going to be replaced by Aboushi in the lineup, but Mike Deviin is clearly getting fed up with Willie’s penalties.
He had 11 last year . . .
I like what I’m seeing from Brian Winters this summer.
He’s really getting after it.
On a Chris Johnson four-yard run up the middle, Winters pancaked Sheldon Richardson . . .
I don’t think either QB did anything tonight to alter the landscape. They were both up-and-down, and couldn’t get the team in the end zone . . .
Geno’s best pass was to the right corner of the end zone to Greg Salas, and I thought Darrin Walls made a nice play on the ball, but he was called for interference. Get used to it. The NFL office on Park Avenue clearly wants more offense, and wants to the officials to call more pass interference penalties . . .
To me, after watching them all spring and summer, there is very little difference between Eric Decker and Greg Salas. Well, there is a big difference, their contracts. But to me, they are very similar talents – good route runners with solid hands and 4.6 speed. I know that is a controversial statement, but I’m just keeping it real. I don’t get caught up in mystique. Similar skill-sets, similar talents . . .
The Jets’ marketing department did a nice job with this scrimmage tonight, making it an event – players came out through a new blow-up tunnel they unveiled tonight, shaped like a plane, there were fireworks and a lot of other bells and whistles. The Cortland stadium was sold out. It wasn’t a run of the mill scrimmage – it was an event . . .
At the end of the scrimmage. Trevor Reilly beat Oday Aboushi, with an inside move, to sack the quarterback. Aboushi was lined up at right tackle on this play. Aboushi also played both guard spots . . .
I really like this guard Patrick Ford out of Eastern Kentucky. He gets a lot of push . . .
