Morristown – The Jets had an action-packed practice today in Florham Park, New Jersey, and here are some Whispers and observations . . .
The Jets, who have some injury issues at running back, signed Lache Seastruck (first name pronounced Lake) yesterday.
Man does he have quick feet. The former Oregon Duck and Baylor Bear, who was a sixth-round pick of the Washington Redskins in 2014, took a handoff today early in practice, and executed an amazing hop-step to the left, leaving a defender grasping at air.
This guy has rare explosion as evidenced by his 41.5 inch vertical at the 2014 combine. That is unusual for a running back, and shows you the spring he has in his legs.
No shortage of talent here. Coming out of high school in Temple, TX, he was rated nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by MaxPreps and fourth-best prospect in America by Sporting News,
I’m not saying this guy is going to make it, but there is no shortage of talent here . . .
As some of you know by now, Josh Martin is getting some starting reps at outside linebacker for Lorenzo Mauldin.
Mauldin and Martin are basically platooning on one side opposite Jordan Jenkins.
Martin brings more speed and quickness than Mauldin and Jenkins. We will see if the results improve.
Over the first few weeks of camp, when the starting offense faces the starting defense. Ryan Fitzpatrick has usually had plenty of time to throw.
Mauldin and Jenkins are both solid players, but the Jets needed to change something up. They have not getting much results off the edge when it’s starters against starters.
Now when the Jets’ pass rushers face Brandon Shell and Jarvis Harrison at the offensive tackles spots, they do get pressure, but not against the starting tackles . . .
Mr. Coffee really hit on his late round and free agent receivers.
Charone Peake (pictured above) has had a terrific camp and caught a TD in the first preseason game. Jalin Marshall’s work in camp is well-documented. Robbie Anderson, a rookie free agent out of Temple, had another good practice today. Anderson has great speed, is smooth coming in and out of his breaks and rarely drops passes. Watching him in practice, I’m surprised he wasn’t drafted. Troy’s Chandler Worthy has really come on over the last week. He’s a smaller receiver with world class speed.
The Jets have a very strong receiver room from top to bottom, and are going to have some very tough decisions when the final cuts come around. My gut is that Anderson and Worthy end up on the practice squad . . .
Former Green Bay Packer tight end Brandon Bostick is quietly having a very good camp. He has great wheels (runs under 4.6) and has improved a great deal as a blocker since he entered the league . . .
With so much talk about Darron Lee’s excellent cover skills, one thing that doesn’t get as much attention is his worker as a blitzer.
When Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers has Lee blitz off the edge, he does a nice job of using his speed and low center-of-gravity to get under tall tackles . . .
