Florham Park – The final open rookie mini-camp practice has ended and that means it’s time for some notes. So let’s get right to it. . .
TONIGHT’S UPDATE WILL BE BY 11:59 PM – SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.
Offensive lineman Jarvis Harrison had an up-and-down day while playing at right guard during team drills. He flashed his great athleticism while pulling and held his blocks to the second level. On one particular play he had a nice block on first-round draft pick Leonard Williams.
However there were some plays in team drills during which he looked lost and was beaten a number of times to the inside as a result. His came in with a reputation of a highly-talented prospect with concerns about his motor. Both of those sides of Harrison were on display on Saturday. . .
Tryout wide receiver Jonathon Rumph, a 6-5, 218-pounder out of Georgia, displayed his explosiveness during team drills, making a number of solid catches throughout the day. He also showed he could potentially be a special teams contributor while making two nice plays on a downing drill near the end zone. . .
It’s pretty apparent Bryce Petty has been working on hard to grasp the Jets’ offense.
During drills with wide receivers, Petty worked on scanning the field and progressing through his reads, one of the areas on which he’ll need work after coming from a more simplistic Baylor offense.
Petty showed his leadership potential, greeting teammates before the start of team drills. During a drill with wide receivers, he spoke to Quincy Enunwa after a poorly thrown ball. . .
Taiwan Jones, an undrafted free agent linebacker out of Michigan State, was described as a “thumper” by head coach Todd Bowles Friday, showed more his ability as a communicator on defense today.
On a play in team drills, Jones shifted the defensive line which resulted in the unit getting pressure on the quarterback. Bowles said he was surprised Jones went undrafted, but the Jets could have a solid linebacker if Jones continues to show develop during these practices. . .
Defensive tackle Deon Simon, the team’s seventh-round pick, said earlier in the day that his biggest asset was his size and strength and it was on display Saturday. He was able to fight through numerous double teams, and when the offense tried to block him one-on-one, Simon usually prevailed.
The one area Simon will look to improve is his initial burst after the snap. He was a bit slow off the line in individual drills. His long-term goal is to “polish” his technique and become “a dominant player on the defensive side of the ball”. . .
The most impressive player on the field was first-round pick Leonard Williams. The defensive lineman set the tone for team drills, getting the defense energized with a loud “Woo!” before the first snap. He dominated the afternoon and beat double teams with ease. . .
Running back Bill Belton, a tryout player from Penn State, showed solid running ability, especially when he got to the second level. The Sicklerville, NJ, native rushed for 1,652 yards and 14 touchdowns in four years with the Nittany Lions. . .
