New Jersey – It’s time for new blood to get into the mix. Why not? We get into this and a few other things in today’s Website Whispers . . .
Darrelle Revis is highly-questionable for the Pittsburgh game with an ankle injury. Watching him in practice the last two days (in the half-hour we get to watch), he doesn’t look like a player that is going to play.
This is a loss they can overcome. It’s not the end of the world for the Jets’ secondary.
Juston Burris has looked good in limited action. His PD in Kansas City on a deep pass down the right sideline was one of the Jets’ best plays in pass defense of the season. It was one of the few times a CB got his hands on a ball. I’m not being flippant. The data backs this up. Darryl Roberts, who the Jets claimed on waivers from New England on the final cut down, has great speed, something the Jets could use. He runs under 4.4. and actually had a good camp in New England this summer, but got caught in a number’s game. He got some great training under Bill Belichick, a secondary guru, during his 1.5 years up in New England.
Look, the Jets secondary play can’t get much worse, so getting these two guys in the mix might be a positive development.
While it Revis doesn’t play on Sunday, that is a blow the Jets can deal with, it would have to be painful to Jets owner Woody Johnson. Revis makes $1 million a week this season . . .
A couple of other players the Jets claimed on the final countdown – Troymaine Pope and Braedon Bowman – are in the Jets news as well.
Don’t be surprised if Pope returns some kicks this week. He’s been getting some work as a kick returner the last couple of weeks of practice. He’s very quick, and has a low center of gravity, which is a good combo on kick returns.
As for Bowman, he’s not going to play this week. He has a knee injury and didn’t practice. I saw him limping in the locker room . . .
We talked yesterday about Brandon Marshall and focusing on Pittsburgh. As you know, yesterday he was chiming in on the Odell Beckham situations with the Giants, as if the Jets don’t have enough of their own problems.
But one long-time Jets observer said today while we watched practice that there is a silver-lining to what Marshall did.
“It took the quarterback who has thrown nine picks the last two games out of the news,” said observer.
Interesting point . . .
On Thursday, the three coordinators have short press conferences. It’s a league rule that they have to speak once a week. Aside from it helping the media, I think the league was also trying to help them – get their names out there for future head coaching jobs.
Chan Gailey and Kacy Rodgers had their pressers, but when Brant Boyer came down, nobody wanted to talk to him. I was the only one there.
You might think this was a personal affront to Boyer. I look at it as a compliment.
The Jets have so many problems on offense and defense; the writers grilled Gailey and Rodgers, and special teams have been very solid, so there is no story there.
As they say, “if it bleeds, it reads.”
Todd Bowles hit this hire out of the part. Adding Boyer was a great move. He holds his players accountable and is a great communicator. I think this guy is a future head coach in college or the NFL. He has the “it” factor . . .
