Maybe it was the easy schedule.
The Jets had the easiest schedule in the league last year, and this year they have the hardest.
And this year’s schedule is taking it’s toll on them.
You can’t play a much harder schedule, with a much better string of quarterbacks, and A)Turn the ball over too much on offense and B)Get some of the worst pass defense play in the league.
Man could the Jets use a quarterback like Jacoby Brissett on their schedule.
Rex is going to pound his chest, but he beat a rookie mid-round quarterback who has no idea what he’s doing yet.
The Jets pass defense is really, really bad. They could use a game against a struggling QB to help their confidence.
Now it’s easy to blame Todd Bowles (a former secondary coach) and the secondary coach Joe Danna for what is going on. Obviously they deserve some blame, but Mr. Coffee deserves come blame as well.
I think some of the problem is skill set-related, so the coaches could be telling a few of these players what to do, and they just can’t do it.
Calvin Pryor and Buster Skrine both run well and are big-time hitters, but both are a tick late diagnosing what is in front of them. This isn’t a new problem.
The coach can’t go out there and react for the players.
And then you have Darrelle Revis, who is making $17 million this year, but plays like a league-minimum corner.
As for Marcus Gilchrist, I don’t think he’s bad, but I don’t think he’s great either. He’s a journeyman safety.
Now Mr. Coffee doled out a fortune to bring in Revis, Skrine and Gilchrist. And the team has not gotten a lot of bang for their buck.
Some might not blame him for Revis. They blame the owner, but like I said before, Mr. Coffee should have said, “We are giving a 30-year-old cornerback 5-years, $70 million over my dead body. You just hired me, you can fire me right here.”
If you are new GM trying to rebuild a team, why go along with that?
And that contract is hurting the Jets’ cap this year, and it’s one of the reasons they probably went real young at some positions like backup receiver and went with Jalin Marshall over Jeremy Ross as the returner, initially. $$$$.
This secondary is atrocious right now. There is no way around it.
And just like last year when Todd Bowles refused to pull Antonio Cromartie, he showing the same tendency this year.
For a guy who is as tough as they come, form the housing projects of Elizabeth (he could kick my butt), I don’t understand this bleeding heart stuff when it comes to lineup changes.
He’s got to find a replacement for Calvin Pryor in coverage. Let him do some work in the box, but you can’t have him running around in the deep patrol. He’s making too many mistakes.
The Jets claimed speedy cornerback Darryl Roberts from New England off waivers. He got great defensive back training from Belichick for a year. Put him out there, for goodness sake.
People can blame Fitz up and down, and deserves a lot of criticism, especially for KC, but this secondary to me is the #1 problem.
And it could lead to a really bad year for the Jets unless Bowles makes some major changes.
Stop doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results.
