Florham Park – The Jets wrapped up a busy work week today in preparation for their trip to Pittsburgh. Let’s look at some of things that went on today . . .
Stephen Hill suffered an injury to his right calf against Buffalo last Sunday.
I saw him today in the locker room with some kind of sleeve on his right leg.
So I went over to him to ask him about his calf.
“It’s fine,” Hill said. “There is nothing seriously wrong with it.” . . .
During Darrelle Revis’ press conference today, before Rex announced he wasn’t going to play, the cornerback said, “I’m getting better every day. I feel good today.”
But I have to be honest – I don’t think he looked that great.
He looked tired and weary.
Reading the tea leaves during his press briefing, I was thinking, “There is no way this guy is going to play.”
It’s very, very unusual for a player, who suffered a concussion, whether it’s mild or severe, to play in the next game, following the head injury.
So I was surprised that the option of Revis playing was even on the table.
Perhaps the Jets kept hope alive to make Pittsburgh prepare for him all week . . .
Bryan Thomas will not play due to a left ankle injury.
“I was getting treatment four times a day to give them confidence I can play,” Thomas said.
The Jets don’t feel they need to rush Thomas back since Garrett McIntyre is more than capable of holding down the fort.
Thomas said that the current ankle injury is in no way related to the left Achilles injury he suffered last year . . .
As you know by now, the Jets signed tight end Dedric Epps off the Chicago Bears practice squad yesterday. This is because Dustin Keller had a setback with his hamstring injury.
This means they need to keep Epps for at least three weeks, or at least pay him three weeks of salary. The CBA mandates that if you sign a player off another practice squad, he needs to be with new club for three weeks. This rule was put in so teams wouldn’t poach other team’s practice squad players for just one week to serve as a spy for the upcoming opponent.
I don’t think Keller is in a great mood right now.
Not only is he injured, but he’s in a contract year, and the Jets don’t seem very interested in getting anything done with him.
And if Jeff Cumberland has a big year, Keller could be gone after this season.
Keller, usually a go-to guy in the locker room, seems to be avoiding the media as much as he can now.
In fact, he reminded team publicist Jared Winley, yesterday, that the media was in the locker room past the deadline, and he made this statement from the equipment room, from behind a partion. Basically what he was saying was, “when are you getting these people out of here, so I can go to my locker without being bothered.”
Keller probably figured he’d be a Jet for a long-time, now you have to wonder.
And with Epps now a lock to get paid for the next three weeks, you have to figure Keller is going to be out the next two or three weeks . . .
Sione Pouha is going to return for the Pittsburgh game. This should help their run defense, which was shaky last week.
He looked good in practice today. Including bursting into the backfield to pressure Tim Tebow on a pass play . . .
Jeremy Kerley, who had a bad back earlier this week, looked pretty good running around the practice field today.
