The Jets made the news today by announcing contract extensions for Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan.
Brian Costello broke the story that they go two-year extensions.
The bottom line is that Bowles and Maccagnan, who haven’t led the Jets to a playoff seasons in three years, are now locked up for three more years.
I’m not being nasty, just stating the facts.
And if they have a bad season next year, do you think Christopher Johnson and Ira Axselrad are going to fire them and eat two years?
Not likely.
How bad is it going to look if the Jets have a bad season in 2018 and the Jets have Bowles and Maccagnan locked up for two more years after that?
These clearly should have been one-year extensions.
But this bottom line is this – it doesn’t matter what the media or fans think. The only thing that matters is what Christopher and Ira think. It’s their decision.
I always thought that should have a football guy over the coach deciding whether the coach is doing a good job. The Jets aren’t set up this way. It’s Christopher (and Ira) deciding whether to keep the coach, because Maccagnan and Bowles are equals and both report to Christopher (and Ira is his right-hand man).
I will have more of an evaluation of this decision next week once the season is over . . .
The Leonard Williams roller-coaster ride continues.
Now it looks like he has a good chance of playing.
He was practicing today with the starters.
I forgot the healing power of being 23-years-old.
Now there is a chance he could have set back. We all know how tricky backs can be, but he looked pretty healthy out there today.
I asked Leonard today about his miraculous recovery, and he said it was just a case of bad back spasms after the game, and he’s fine now . . .
If I were the Jets, I’d play practice squad QB Joel Stave in this game. Obviously there is no way this is going to happen.
A big part of player personnel is political and driven by PR, they would never do this because it would cause a firestorm.
I’m not putting Stave in Canton, but I think he’s the best of the Jets’ three healthy quarterbacks.
I’m not kidding . ..
Jets have no sacks in the last two games, but they refuse to make any changes at edge-rusher.
Why sign Obum Gwacham and never try him coming off the edge?
On October 4, the signed him off the Cardinals’ practice squad. Three months later, he’s still not playing at OLB, and they have a poor edge rush?
Why not kick the tires on him?
Kony Ealy is a great guy, but he was brought in to help the Jets pass rush and he has one sack in 14 games.
I forgot, it’s all about the depth chart.
Bowles has repeatedly explained that the reason that Hackenberg isn’t playing is because Petty is ahead of him on the depth chart.
But Petty isn’t playing well, so who cares about the depth chart? Todd is always deferring to the depth chart whenever asked about why a certain guy isn’t playing. Like when I asked about Derrick Jones. Are the Jets corners playing so well that Jones shouldn’t get a shot now? Who cares about the depth chart?
I think being too married to the depth chart is a bad idea, but what do I know.
I can assure you Belichick doesn’t give a rat’s behind about a depth chart.
You are 5-11, who cares about the depth chart?
