Aside from the won-loss record
this other number is also really bad for the Jets’ head coach.
ESPN State Bureau: “The Jets’ minus-110 point differential is the second worst in franchise history through six games of a season (minus-122 in 1976).”
In a league set up for parity, and not loaded with a ton of great teams, it’s unacceptable to get blow out as much as the Jets have, in a league designed for competitive balance.
Look, you are going to lose games. The other team gets paid also. But when you aren’t competitive, that is fastest way to the hot seat . . .
Don’t know what to make of this, and it might not mean a thing, but I have not seen Jets owner Christopher Johnson nearly as much at practice the last couple of weeks as I did earlier in the season . . .
George Fant, hurt his leg in practice on Thursday, and was watching, not participating, in today’s practice. He was wearing a compression sleeve on his left leg as he watched practice. Fant moved back to right tackle this week with the return of Mekhi Becton to left tackle. So if Fant can’t go, it will be either Chuma Edoga or Conor McDermott at right tackle, and maybe even a little bit of both . . .
Alex Lewis went as long as he could with his messed up shoulder, but will not go this week, and will be replaced by Josh Andrews. Lewis’ has been playing with a bad shoulder for quite a while now, and plays with it strapped in . . .
Sometimes returners are just meant to do one of the return jobs, not both. There is a good chance you will see speedster Ty Johnson return kicks this week, but don’t expect him in the punt return role anytime soon. Not just because Braxton Berrios is manning that role, but watching him, he doesn’t seem to be a comfortable punt catcher, fighting the ball a little, so putting him back on punts might be risky . . .
People want to know what is going on with rookie defensive end Jabari Zuniga, who has been out with a calf injury all season. The injury was suffered in training camp. Well I saw him today working with special teams, with an orange beanie on his helmet, which means he was working scout team. So it seems like he’s getting real close . . .
Watching practice this week, it’s pretty apparent that Sam Darnold will return this week as the Jets’ starting QB, after missing the last two games with a shoulder injury, Clearly this is still some pain in his shoulder, but it’s not enough to keep him out.
I have to admit, I was wrong thinking that Joe Flacco was an upgrade at this point. I thought he was a little better at seeing the field than Darnold, but he really wasn’t.
A couple examples:
Late in the first half, on third-and-six, Joe Flacco forced an pass, incomplete, to Jamison Crowder, on third-and-six on the left side. Braxton Berrios was open on a cross and the QB didn’t see him.
In the fourth quarter, Flacco had La’Mical Perine wide open in the right flat, but forced it to Breshard Perriman in the end zone, in complete, on fourth-and-three. to turn it over on downs, late in the game.
It might’ve been good for Darnold to take a step back for a few weeks, take a deep breath, watch from the sidelines, and now re-emerge. We will see . . .
Two questions about Denzel Mims on the brink of making his debut. How will he fair getting off the line, something scouts wondered about and how comfortable will he be with the playbook, after playing in a very simplistic system at Baylor?
