Jets QB Geno Smith refuses to look too far ahead.
He’s very much a process thinker at this stage of his career.
Process thinking, something Nick Saban emphasized a great deal when he coached Alabama, is a philosophy that emphasizes focusing on daily tasks that help you prepare for the season, and not looking at goals down the road, like making the playoffs.
In other words, focus on the next rep at practice or in the weight room, and ace those, and if you do that daily, it can set you up for future success.
Recently, Smith was asked in a press conference: “You know the history of this franchise. How much have you thought about being the guy now, to finally end that playoff draught?”
“Yeah, I mean those things are so far ahead of us,” Smith said. “Me, being in the league as long as I’ve been, I understand that you can only focus on what’s right in front of you and that’s being in the moment, staying in the moment.”
Of course, Smith wants the Jets to have a good team this year, but in order to do that, he feels they need to focus on the job at hand right now, and that is getting better every day in OTAs and minicamp.
“We want to be the best team in the world,” Smith said. “I don’t feel shy about saying that, but I understand there’s a lot of work, like I said, to be done, and you got to focus on the work, you focus on getting better every single day.”
He added, “I really look forward to, again, just going to practice tomorrow and trying to get better. That’s the way I’m going to treat this entire year and the rest of my career.”
Smart approach.
