If this is accurate, and is indeed the case, the Jets need to pick this player, regardless of what they have at the position or what the media might say . . .
David Carr was the first pick of the 2002 draft by Charlie Casserly, Mr. Coffee and company in Houston.
He was probably rushed into action, and didn’t experience the success the Texans had hoped, and they released him in 2007. He bounced around the league after that mainly as a backup.
He ended up playing 11 seasons in the NFL. After all he went he through, a first-round quarterback, and then a backup, he has tremendous insight into what it takes to be a successful NFL QB.
Carr now works for the NFL Network, and he did a terrific job of breaking down the draft’s quarterbacks. He did extensive film study of the top prospects.
And if his assessment is correct, the Jets need to think long-and-hard about picking Mitch Trubisky, if he falls to the six spot.
The following sentence is the reason the Jets need to probably pick him if he’s available”
“Although limited in college reps, Trubisky has the best chance to start immediately,” Carr said. “On film, I’ve seen him go through read progressions consistently. He looks from his main target to the next guy and sometimes even his third and fourth options.”
Bingo!.
I’m so sick and tired of people focusing on the wrong things with these quarterbacks. THE most important thing, along with accuracy, is the ability to go through progressions. So many of these kids coming out of college are one-read quarterbacks. And they were able to have success doing this on the college level, because most secondaries are terrible in college, so the first read is often open.
Bryce Petty came out of simplistic offense at Baylor featuring mainly one-read throws. And you saw last year, how much he struggled when his first-read wasn’t open.
And this takes us to Clemson’s DeShaun Watson.
“Watson stares at his first target — and continues to stare — while two others are open,” Carr said.
That is troubling.
Thank you David Carr for you candor. All these “experts” keep on telling us how great Watson is because he’s a “winner.” Yes, he’s a winner, but so was Tajh Boyd at Clemson. He came to the Jets, and clearly couldn’t play on the NFL level. Watson might be better than Boyd, but I just wonder how much. And if he’s a guy who is fixated on his first read, I would stay away from him.
Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes is shooting up the charts.
“Mahomes was never under center in college,” said Carr. “A pro-style offense is a completely different animal. He has the pocket presence, and I could watch him throw all day, but he’s just never been asked to do the things he’ll have to do at the next level.”
Carr thinks Mahomes could transform his game to the NFL in time, but it’s going to take a lot of time.
If Trubisky can truly go through is progressions like Carr feels he can, the Jets might need to pull the trigger on this pick.
Because most of these college prospects, this year, and other years, tend to bird-dog throws to their primary target. That is the troubling reality with most college QB prospects.
