I’m sorry. I just don’t buy it. I’m not buying what he’s selling?
Hey, maybe it’s healthy for him to believe this story-line, but I never got the sense this was the reality.
“It wasn’t [Woody Johnson],” Revis said to the New York Post of the decision to send him out of New York in the first place. “He’s a businessman and he’s going to make the best decisions he can and bring the best players in here or bring the right players in here to contend. It wasn’t him. It was the general manager. What I was told by Idzik wasn’t accurate. But that’s a whole other story. I never had anything against Mr. Johnson.”
Like I wrote above, it’s healthy for Revis to believe this. Idzik’s gone, and Johnson is still the owner.
It’s good for him to think the owner loves him and never wanted to move on, and the former GM was the bad guy who traded him.
I don’t think it’s true, but from a motivational standpoint, it’s a win-win.
Remember right before John Idzik had his introductory press conference, Jason La Canfora of CBS wrote on January 23, 2013, “The New York Jets, fresh off an exhaustive hunt for new general manager John Idzik, will explore options to deal star corner Darrelle Revis this offseason, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
“Revis, whose contract voids after the 2014 season, is set to earn $6 million in 2013 (between salary and bonuses), and owner Woody Johnson has strong reservations about the ability to extend Revis’s deal, the sources said. Johnson has expressed his desire to attempt to land value for Revis now, rather than risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent a year from now, most likely seeking as much draft-pick compensation for him as possible.”
This story appeared before Idzik even put up his college diploma and family photos on the walls of his new office.
It was reported by several media outlets that Johnson, during the interviews with GM candidates that led to the hiring of Idzik, was asking them in the meetings how they would possible handle Revis’ future.
NFL.com’s Albert Breer wrote: “Going back to discussions with general manager candidates, Jets owner Woody Johnson has expressed a need to figure out where the team is headed with Revis.”
Once again from La Canfora: “Johnson has made it very clear he would like to pursue a means to reap rewards for Revis now, sources said, and it is likely to be an immediate part of Idzik’s initial job duties.”
And think about this for a second. If Johnson didn’t want to trade Revis, do you really think the new GM would come into town, disregard his wishes, and send the team’s star cornerback packing? That would a heck of a first impression with your new boss. That makes little sense.
So this contention from Revis is probably misguided.
But if that is what he chooses to believe, it’s probably a good thing for the owner-top player on the team dynamic.
