Nashville – A couple of things to do get into today in our premium section, including a possible reunion of the three amigos in another city . . .
The Jets just barely got by a very bad Tennessee Titans team.
Not only are they bad, they were ravaged by injuries entering the game.
Did you know, not only where they without both starting offensive tackles (Michael Oher and Taylor Lewan), but key reserve tackle Byron Stingily was sidelined.
So that would be the equivalent of the Jets being without D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Breno Giacomini and Ben Iljalana.
Their starting right tackle, Jamon Meredith, was signed five days before the game.
That is a lot to overcome.
On top of that, they had just three active receivers.
Two really talented young receivers, who were really coming on this season, Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter, were out.
And honestly, if LB Wes Woodyard didn’t get that penalty on third down, in a scrap with Eric Decker, the Jets would have likely lost the game.
This win means very little . . .
“I think I’m a decent football coach, and I think people who know the game realize that,” said Rex Ryan today.
And Mike Tannenbaum and Matt Higgins realize that in Miami.
Higgins is like the Ira Akselrad of the Miami Dolphins.
The former Jets VP, who ironically left the Jets because he was tired of Ira’s meddling, has emerged as a power player in Miami.
How do you think Tannenbaum landed a consulting job down there?
Higgins is an excellent climber. He knows how to move up the food chain quickly wherever he works.
I hear Tannenbaum is in the Dolphins’ facility a lot.
Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey can’t be very comfortable.
There could be a coup in the works, especially with the Dolphins’ sinking.
And Higgins could see Rex as a guy who could help fill seats at Sun Life Stadium, which is always a battle.
Rex is the Anti-Joe Philbin as far as charisma.
I’m not saying he’s a better coach, but definitely better for the Dolphins’ marketing department, in a very fickle sports town.
So don’t be surprised if the three amigos reunite in Miami . . . .
Let me just say one thing in regards to Rex saying, “I think people who know the game realize that.”
Yes, a lot of people realize Rex is a good football man.
But there are also people who think there are accountability issues at times in his program, and that is something he needs to work on.
In Baltimore, one of the reasons they chose John Harbaugh over Rex, for the head coaching job, was the accountability issue.
While a terrific defensive strategist with the Ravens, there was a perception that he wasn’t tough enough on some players, like the troubled Chris McAllister.
With the Jets, there have been some issues, like with Santonio Holmes.
Rex thought making Holmes a captain would improve his attitude.
That didn’t work out, and because he didn’t want to embarrass Holmes, he did away with the concept of permanent captains.
Rex is non-confrontational, which some might argue isn’t a great character trait for a coach, where sometimes you need to confront players over their actions or penalties.
Also he has a “loyalty to the point of defiance” issue.
Look, I’m not looking to kick a guy when he’s down.
Just keeping it real.
He needs to step up in these areas, if his second go-around as a head coach is going to work out better.
Also, have a star QB might help.
