New Jersey – Geno Smith said nothing wrong. Why not think positive? In a league that is set up for parity like no other, anything can happen, any year . . .
“I feel good about our team making a Super Bowl run…You know, why not us?” – Geno Smith said at a charity football camp in his hometown of Miramar.
I agree with him – why not them?
This league is loaded with parity, thanks to the the salary cap. Also thanks to the way the draft and waiver-wire order are set up to even the playing field.
Who ever thought the Baltimore Ravens would have won the Super Bowl two years ago? That was a good, not great team.
How many thought Seattle would win the last Super Bowl? I mean, I think we all thought they would be solid, but how many people thought – Super Bowl champions?
And when you really look at the Seahawks, the formula they used last year, is one that isn’t that far from what the 2014 Jets could be all about.
The Jets’ defensive front should be outstanding – create a lot of havoc – much like Seattle. Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison and Quinton Coples could have a dominating 2014.
I know some in the media are making a big deal about the departure of Antonio Cromartie, but I actually think the Jets will be better at cornerback this year than 2013.
I really do.
They now have a bunch of guys willing to get physical at the line, something Cromartie refused to do. And remember, physical bump-and-run cornerback play was a big part of Seattle’s success last year.
Dee Milliner should be better in 2014 after his trial-by-fire last year.
Dimitri Patterson is underrated.
Dex McDougle, a smart, tough, instinctive cornerback, should help them immediately.
Another big part of Seattle’s success last year was their running game, led by perhaps the game’s most violent runner – Marshawn Lynch.
I say “perhaps” because you could make a strong argument that Chris Ivory is on Lynch’s level as far as violent running.
“Marshawn Lynch and Chris Ivory are the two most violent runners in the NFL,” said Ray Horton, the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator.
And this Ivory/Johnson, a “Thunder and Lightning” combo, has the potential to be something special. You talk about two guys with different skill sets that compliment each other well – wow.
The Jets are loaded at tight end with Jeff Cumberland, Jace Amaro and Zach Sudfeld (who looked very good in the spring).
The Jets’ return game should be so much better this year with Jacoby Ford and Jalen Saunders.
And they have a “money-in-the-bank” kicker – Nick Folk.
I think you get my point – why not?
But with all this being said, and I don’t mean to be disrespectful or flippant, but I think the quarterback who gives the Jets best chance to win is Michael Vick.
So I agree with Geno Smith – why not?
But I think they have a better chance to do it with Vick.
