Chatham – A few things to get into in today’s premium section, including Revis-Watkins, Randy Bullock. Calvin Pryor and more . . .
There is so much talk about a Darrelle Revis-Sammy Watkins matchup.
However, it might not be a great idea for Revis to follow around Watkins 100 percent of the time.
Watkins has world class speed and it translate to the field. In other words, he plays fast in his pads. Some guys with great track speed don’t transfer the speed to the field. Watkins does.
With Antonio Cromartie out, Buster Skrine might start at corner, with Marcus Williams handling the nickel spot.
Skrine has great speed, Revis doesn’t.
Revis doesn’t clearly run the 4.38 forty he did coming out of Pitt.
I’m not looking to beat up Revis. He’s still a good player, but it’s not a good idea to just blindly assign him to whoever the other team’s top receiver is. You have to consider the match-up.
From a speed standpoint, Revis would be a better match-up with Robert Woods on the other side. Woods is a good player, but lacks pure speed and isn’t as elusive as Watkins. Woods game is more short-to-intermediate, and Revis is much better suited to guard a guy like this.
I’m not saying Revis shouldn’t cover Watkins at all. I’m just saying if the Jets put Revis on Watkins full-time, they are probably asking for trouble . . .
Antonio Cromartie sitting out this week is probably a good thing. Aside from the injury, he needs to take a step back for a week, after two bad games in a row. And I’m not so sure this staff had the wherewithal to bench him. It’s very hard to bench a prominent start. Not for Belichick, but for many other coaches. So it took an injury to make this happen. I’m not saying an injury is good thing. No way I would say that. But how else was the benching going to happen? How else was Marcus Williams game-clinching pick going to happen? Coaches can be very stubborn and loyal . . .
As you know by now, Randy Bullock is the Jets’ new kicker, replacing Nick Folk who went on injured reserve.
One Jets worker I was talking to today said he was surprised the Houston Texans got rid of Bullock.
When you combine last season, and three games he kicked this year, Bullock made 35 of 41 field goals. That is damn good.
He missed two extra points this year from the new distance, and that is probably what got him bounced. It might have been an overreaction.
So it was no surprise that Bullock won the competition to be the Jets’ placekicker. The guy is top-shelf.
And he’s also very good on kickoffs.
Now it remains to be seen how he handles the challenges of MetLife Stadium, which can present tricky winds.
Remember his home field the last three years, Reliant Stadium, has a retractable dome, so it’s more kicker friendly than “The Met.”
But he isn’t a bad option at all to pick up in the middle of the season.
Bulluck was a fifth-round pick of the Texans in 2012 (by Mr. Coffee’s scouting department), and not a lot of kickers get drafted, so it speaks to his talent . . .
Nick Mangold thinks he’s going to play on Thursday.
But here is the issue.
Yes, his neck has felt much better the last couple of days in practice.
However, there is little or no contact in practice.
So yes, Mangold’s neck can hold up in touch football, which is essentially what NFL’s in-season practices are.
But what happens after a couple of collisions with the Bills’ 6-3, 331-pound nose tackle Marcel Dareus? That is the $64,000 question nobody can answer right now.
Last week, Mangold felt good later in the week, but after about a quarter of banging heads with Sen’Derrick Marks, his neck felt lousy . . .
Calvin Pryor basically said today what a lot of people think – Rex is a good defensive coordinator. When asked if he’s a good head coach, Pryor said, “No comment.”
As for people being critical of Pryor for talking trash before Thursday’s game, keep in mind, Ryan actually fired the first shot.
Earlier in the day, Ryan was critical of the Jets’ 2014 draft. Pryor was the first and most important pick of that draft.
