Was it clickbait?
Or is their some legitimacy to Rich Cimini’s story today, with the headline – “Could Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence projected draft pick, spurn the Jets?”
Is the ESPN Jets insider, who also works for the Jets media partner, SNY, on to something?
The issue with the premise that Lawrence would spurn the Jets due to their reputation as a dysfunctional organization, is it’s focused on the Jets right now, on December 16, 2020, in the midst of a winless season.
And things are very bad right now, no doubt.
However, Lawrence wouldn’t be coming into the current situation.
“Everyone on that (coaching) staff is going to be fired and that includes Adam Gase,” said VSIN’s Brent Musburger.
Gase clearly isn’t doing a great job as Jets coach, but he likely wouldn’t be Lawrence’s coach.
And the Jets have a very competent GM, who hit his first two draft picks out of the park – left tackle Mekhi Becton and wide receiver Denzel Mims.
And last time I checked, these two players should be pretty darn enticing to a QB – a potential franchise left tackle and wide receiver.
So Becton and Mims should make the Jets enticing to any QB.
And getting back to the coaching situation, it looks like Douglas, will lead the search for a new head coach.
If the business people stay the heck out of this coaching search, and let Douglas pick the coach, the Jets have a chance to land a terrific coach. They need an alpha-dog culture builder. They don’t need a play-calling whiz who’s a wallflower. They need a leader of men/program builder.
If the business people are involved, and make another ill-conceived pick, if I were Lawrence, it would make me pause.
But my sense is that Douglas is going to lead the search, and unlike they business-types, he knows what to look for in a coach, and what questions to ask in the interviews.
And speaking of Douglas, this top-shelf talent-evaluator, will enter the 2021 draft with two first-round picks, a pick at the top of the second round (which is like another first-round pick), and two third-round picks.
That is amazing draft capital, so this should excite Lawrence, along with all the cap space the Jets will be armed with for free agency in 2021.
My point is the concept of this article is based on the Jets’ current situation, which is awful, but not the state they will likely be when Lawrence would arrive after the draft, with a new head coach (who Douglas will likely pick) and new coaching staff, along with ton of draft and free agent capital.
So perhaps this article was click-bait. Some fans on Twitter feel that way, and said as much under the story link.
“Just stop click-baiting,” tweeted Rory.
“Click-bait nonsense,” tweeted Treb Trouble.
But it worked, according to another fan.
“Clickbait, but I’m still clicking,” tweeted GPN12345.
I don’t think Lawrence is going to avoid the Jets.
Because the Jets now, are not the Jets in April, when the draft takes place.
If they let Douglas pick the coach, sans business people, and he would then be attached at the hip with perhaps big-time coach, there are probably much better days ahead for the Jets.
