New Jersey – Some people just want to move on. Is that smart? Probably not, but let’s look at it from both perspectives . . .
I have proposed several different deals on Twitter for Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Today I tweeted, “How about a three-year deal for $29 million with $19 million guaranteed?”
And like the last time I proposed numbers on twitter, not too different than this, I got attacked by the respondents.
I don’t care about being attacked. That comes with the territory. I just want to deal with the reality of the situation.
First off, let me provide you with some of the responses from today.
Response #1 – “No way, think it’s time to move on.”
Response #2 – “NO THANKS.”
Response #3 – “How about no.”
Response #4 – “LOL – how about no.”
Response #5 – “Yesterday’s news – move on.”
Response #6 – “What is happening with @jetswhispers? Why bid against yourself for Fitz? Moving on would be the best thing & reinvest the $ saved on Mo.”
Response #7 – “@jetswhispers is Fitz paying you to keep this thing out there? He may need a raise to pay you for a he services you have provided, lol.”
Response #8 – “Hell no!!! Who are we bidding against?????”
Response #9 – “Hell no. Show him the door.”
Response #9 – “@jetswhispers goes to show how BAD the QB market is. that Fitzpatrick would be eligible for that $$.”
Obviously this is just a small sampling of Jets fans, but you get the idea. A lot of fans are fed up with Fitz’s demands and want to move on.
But I honestly I think the last responder I listed is on to something.
“Goes to show how BAD the QB market is that Fitzpatrick would be eligible for that $$,” said uresponder #9.
I’ve touched on this many times. The NFL QB landscapes is barren. There are about six or seven top shelf guys and so many other teams are making due with mediocrity or young guys who don’t know what they are doing yet (or maybe ever).
Brock Osweiler got a signed a 4 year, $72,000,000 contract with $37,000,000 guaranteed.
We don’t know yet if he’s better than Fitz. Perhaps he is. I’m sure many suspect he is, but we don’t know that yet.
Sam Bradford got a 2-year, $35,000,000 contract with the Philadelphia Eagles with $22,000,000 guaranteed.
You saw him against the Jets. Did you think he was better than Fitz? In all fairness, I think we can say they are close to the same level.
Look, I’m not saying give Fitz what these guys got, and obviously nowhere near what Osweiler got.
I will even throw in Andy Dalton. Two years ago, the Cincinnati QB got a 6-year deal for $96,000,000 million with $17,000,000 guaranteed.
At this point, it’s hard to say Dalton is better than Fitz.
And I’m not even going to get into Colin K’s contract.
Look, I’m not putting Fitz in Canton, but the contract I tweeted today isn’t crazy when you consider what quarterbacks on his level make.
I was talking to another writer on the phone before and said, “I’m not a Fitz apologist, but I’ve been around the Jets for 20 years, and I haven’t seen that level of quarterback play around here in quite some time. I know the bar has been low, but he did a very nice job, obviously aside from that last game.”
So to me, when you consider what similar quarterbacks are making, and the dearth of answers at the position in the NFL, I think my offer is fair.
