Florham Park – It seems like a lifetime ago that QB Geno Smith was drafted by the Jets.
The year was 2013 when the Jets picked Smith in the second round out of West Virginia.
Now 13 years later, he’s back under center for the Jets once again, after an his initial four-year stint with Gang Green, and then stops with the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and Las Vegas Raiders.
At 35 years old, he’s still doing his thing on the NFL level.
For a player to be entering his 13th season in the NFL is no easy task, in a league where the average career length is around three years.
“This is a high-level business,” said Jets linebacker Demario Davis. “To play a decade in this league is tough, just ask guys who have done it, and to do it as the most important position (QB), says a lot.”
Davis certainly knows how tough it is to hang around the NFL. He is now entering his 15th NFL season.
Davis knows that NFL teams don’t hand out jobs like candy. If you can’t play, you aren’t hanging around as long as Smith.
“There is a reason he keeps ending up on rosters,” Davis said.
Davis has seen Smith evolve since their first stint as teammates with the Jets in 2015-16.
“He’s very comfortable in his skin,” Davis said. “He knows who he is. He has arrived at this moment with his mind right, and you can feel it.”
