Laveranues Coles, who hit a wall last year in Cincinnati, and was dropped after just one year by the Bengals, is expected to re-sign with the Jets. The announcement was made by ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
“Free-agent wide receiver Laveranues Coles, who played with the Jets from 2000 to 2002 and 2005-08, will work out for team officials Friday at the team’s headquarters in Florham Park, N.J., a league source told ESPNNewYork.com,” wrote Cimini. “Barring complications, Coles is expected to sign with his former team. The Jets report to training camp Sunday in Cortland, N.Y.”
If the Jets sign Coles, they are basically flipping the bird at David Clowney, Andrae Allison and all their other young receivers.
But then again, we have seen this happen over and over again.
Remember, Mike Tannenbaum loves Coles as a human being. He talks about him in Mother Teresa-type terms, even though the receiver called him a liar a few years ago, and the wideout has been very nasty to the media on many occasions. Just ask Ken Berger, who he once said, “Get out of my way, little media man.” Or when he called New York Times reporter Greg Bishop (a real good guy) “an idiot,” after a legitimate question. And I had infamous run-in with him when he lunged at me.
However, this isn’t about the media, it’s about winning football games.
And clearly the Jets think Coles can help them.
But the next time Rex Ryan claims “nobody can cover ‘The Clown,'” we should all tell him to spare us.
