Why did it take so long?
The Jets are moving on from running back coach Taylor Embree.
When I say, “Why did it take so long,” don’t take that the wrong way.
I’m not saying he deserved to be fired.
But what I don’t get is, if you are going to go in a different direction, why can’t it be decided right after the season, like you saw with the Cleveland Browns moving from their tight end coach, running back coach and offensive coordinator, shortly after their season ended last week?
The Giants moved quickly on some assistant coaches once their season ended.
What more information do you need?
You are evaluating these people all year from the off-season program, through camp, and the season.
This is why the Jets need a football czar.
You need to be a little more decisive with some of these key decisions.
Like once Aaron Rodgers got hurt in the opener, go out immediately and get a veteran QB.
There is no need for paralysis through analysis.
Seriously, if you were going to move on from Embree, just do it.
It’s kind of like decisions in game, a guy makes a bad play or commits a bonehead penalty, pull his ass out of the game. Boom. Just do it.
Like why wasn’t Michael Clemons benched at some point late in the year, after his tunnel fight with Buffalo’s Dion Dawkins, his fight against Miami that blooded an official and dropping F-bombs against fans in Cleveland?
Somebody needs to be the alpha dog and say, “He’s sitting this week to send him a message.”
Did Embree deserve to be fired?
I have no idea, I’m not on the meetings.
Dalvin Cook’s blitz pickups and hot reads on quick passes weren’t great, but he was a late arrival. Maybe he didn’t study hard enough. I would put that more on Cook, who was more a hostage than a volunteer. It was pretty clear once Rodgers got hurt, and the season headed south, he didn’t want to be there.
Maybe he was a bad fit with offensive Nathaniel Hackett. Remember Embree was there before Hackett, working two years with Mike LaFleur, who he had a background with.
And we know Hackett is beyond reproach and not going anywhere, so perhaps an assistant or two will move on who he doesn’t jibe with.
But the season ended January 7. This is coming out about two weeks later.
Maybe there are too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to key football decisions.
I’m not saying rush into anything, but with Embree, they had enough evidence during the off-season, training camp and during the season. And he had been there the previous two years.
Don’t let him twist in the wind. Just move on, if that is what you want to do.
He’s a big boy, he can deal with it.
It’s like that LaFleur decision last after the season, where it took three days to announce it. That took three days to come out because they were trying to figure out how to spin it.
First of all, what kind of message did that send to the fans, that you are letting LaFleur “pursue other opportunities?” When you fire people, the message is usually what is going on is not good enough. Stop the spinning and deliberating so much – just do what you think is right, and move on.
