Florham Park – The Jets were in good spirits today, doing a good job moving on from their loss to Cincinnati, as they prepare for Buffalo on Thursday . . .
Todd Bowles took a really smart approach to his press conference today.
He refused to talk about anything about Sunday’s game.
He was asked myriad questions about Darrelle Revis’ rough game and refused to go there.
First of all, it’s a no-win situation to talk about Revis. He makes $17 million this year. Are you going to rip him in press conferences?
It’s never a good idea to rip franchise players in press conferences.
Remember when Jim Mora ripped Peyton Manning once in Indy. He didn’t last much longer there.
I’m not saying Bowles would be fired if he ripped Revis. I’m just saying it’s really hard in sports to pick high-priced superstars. It just is.
And other reason it’s was a good idea to stonewall Cincinnati question was the short week.
Think about it. When you play Thursday. It’s almost like you are starting your preparation on a Thursday during a regular week. And honestly, you have stopped talking about the previous game already.
So mentally, it’s a good idea to move on right now.
Bowles shutdown every question about the secondary and Revis, and there were quite a few.
But Bowles better “fix the dern thing” as my old friend Dave Hutchinson used to say.
I don’t mean this to be disrespectful, but they need to treat Revis like a middle of the road CB right now. I’m trying to think of a name. Let’s say Lito Sheppard, who was here. Let him cover #2 receivers or if he covers a #1, have help ready. Deal with reality. Don’t deal with hype . . .
There is so much attention being paid to the status of Bills star receiver Sammy Watkins who is having issues with his surgical foot.
Watkins claims he’s going to play on Thursday. A source, clearly his agent, has sent out signals that the might not, or if he does, he’s not close to 100 percent.
But while that injury is clearly one to keep an eye on, I’m more focused on the Cordy Glenn injury.
The Bills talented left tackle re-injured a high ankle sprain that sidelined him throughout the summer. He’s a longshot to play, and backup Seantrel Henderson is unavailable due to a marijuana suspension.
And you have a Jets defensive line coming to town coming off a sack-a-palooza against the Bengals.
The Jets pass rush could have a field day on Sunday.
Glenn makes the big bucks for a reason. He’s a superb left tackle. When you lose your franchise left tackle, that spells a lot of trouble for most teams . . .
The Jets added OLB Victor Ochi to their practice squad today. He’s from Valley Stream, Long Island, not far from where Jets camp used to be at Hofstra. I actually grew up in the next town, Lynbrook.
Pictured above is Ochi talking to Newsday’s Kim Martin. Not only is Ochi from Valley Stream, but he went to Stony Brook, so he’s a Long Island-guy through and through.
The Jets need a guy like this on the practice squad – an edge pass rusher with a high ceiling. He’s 6-1, 242 and has good quickness, a terrific motor and does a nice a job of getting underneath tall tackles. This is a smart project for the Jets to take on . . .
